A Michigan State hockey star will reportedly make his NHL debut on Tuesday.
Michigan State star freshman forward Porter Martone signed a three-year entry level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday, and now, he’s expected to make his debut with the pro team on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. According to Jamey Baskow of Flyers Nitty Gritty, Martone will meet with the media on Monday and if cleared as expected by the team doctors, he’ll be good to make his NHL debut for Philadelphia on Tuesday.
In his lone season with the Spartans, Martone recorded 50 points (25 goals and 25 assists) across 35 games. He was a First Team All-Big Ten selection and also selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
Martone was selected by the Flyers with the No. 6 overall pick in last year’s NHL Draft and was expected to be a one-and-done with the Spartans coming into this season. Obviously, Michigan State fans would prefer Martone was still with the Spartans and preparing for the Frozen Four in two weeks, but that simply was not in the cards. So at least we can watch Martone live out his dream and make his NHL debut this week as a consolation prize.
