The Anaheim Ducks captain has confirmed that he will be in the lineup against the Maple Leafs on Monday night at the Honda Center despite suffering a leg injury last week.

“Stand behind my own mistakes,” Gudas told media on Monday morning in Anaheim. “I want to address it myself. That’s one of the reasons, 100%. One of those games where I have to play.”
The ‘it’ needs little clarity.
The Leafs earned every piece of criticism that went their way when they failed to respond in the moments after Gudas ended captain Auston Matthews’ season with a knee-on-knee hit during a game in Toronto on March 12.
The Leafs on the ice at the time — William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Easton Cowan and Brandon Carlo — in the following days took varying degrees of responsibility for not going after Gudas.

In a 2025-26 season that has been riddled with failure and is bound to cost coach Craig Berube his job — and perhaps cost general manager Brad Treliving his job as well — the Leafs’ failure to engage Gudas in defence of their captain stands as the club’s most embarrassing incident.
To add to the drama expected once the puck drops on Monday night, head of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety George Parros reportedly will be in attendance.
Gudas returned to the Ducks lineup last week in Vancouver after serving a five-game suspension for the hit on Matthews, who has had surgery on his left knee. Gudas expressed remorse that day, saying he felt “terrible” for the hit on Matthews.
Two nights after Gudas returned, he was hurt against the Calgary Flames and did not play in Edmonton against the Oilers on Saturday, casting doubt on his participation against the Leafs.

“Good to play,” Gudas said on Monday when he was asked about his health.
Leafs recall Bo Groulx
Bo Groulx is back with the Leafs.
The 26-year-old forward has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies on an emergency basis.
Groulx had three goals and two assists in nine games with the Leafs before he was sent back to the Marlies on Friday.
Had he played in a 10th game, he would have required waivers to be sent to the American Hockey League and the Leafs didn’t want to risk losing him to another NHL club.
The Leafs were able to recall him on an emergency basis after he played in one game with the Marlies and he filled that requirement when he suited up against Rochester on Friday. Now, when Groulx is returned to the Marlies for the AHL playoffs, he will not require waivers as the recall was for emergency reasons.

When the Leafs lost 5-1 in St. Louis against the Blues on Saturday — recording a season-low 13 shots on goal — they didn’t have a 13th forward with them.
Whether Groulx is in the lineup against the Ducks is to be determined.
When the Leafs sent Groulx down on Friday, Berube said he didn’t need to give the player any specific instructions. At the time, though, Berube made it sound like Groulx wouldn’t be back with the Leafs this soon.
“He wanted to go down and help them and play,” Berube said on Friday. “That’s a testament to his character and what he believes in, and how it all works, and he understands it.
“He played well. I used him in a lot of different situations, and I thought he handled himself well.”
More to come …
