Anton Frondell scored his first NHL goal despite the loss. The Chicago Blackhawks now has 14 overtime losses, 4th most in the NHL.

Anton Frondell scored his first NHL goal in the Chicago Blackhawks overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets. Tyler Bertuzzi also notched two goals in the contest.

New Number, New Frondell

“An amazing feeling, a dream coming true.”

After the conclusion of the road trip, Anton Frondell got prepared to debut at home in a new number. The third overall pick changed his number from 15 to 16 after just four games. So how did Anton Frondell do in his debut at the United Center? Excellent.

With just under five minutes into the period, Louis Crevier fired a shot into the end boards. Ilya Mikheyev put a puck off the net, and the puck bounced into the slot, landing right on the stick of Anton Frondell.

On his goal, Frondell commented, “I find the hot spot in front of the net. Puck ended up on my stick, and good feeling watching it go in.”

In the number 15 jersey, Frondell had an assist per game. In 16, he is officially a goal per game. The Chicago Blackhawks third overall pick has been feeling himself since joining the team. Currently, Frondell has one goal and four assists in five games. All of this at just eighteen years old.

Big Goal Bert

Tyler Bertuzzi has unlocked a new echelon of production this season. The former Detroit Red Wing has been a pleasant surprise for the Chicago Blackhawks. In Jeff Blashill’s system, Bertuzzi has thrived. Bertuzzi is second on the team in points with 55, and in goals with 31 tallies. While 19 of those have been on the road, Bertuzzi notched two at home in this one.

The first goal was something out of a Mighty Ducks movie. Ilya Mikeheyev forced a turnover, and Bertuzzi collected the puck and skated into the slot. He then proceeded to do a backhand spin-o-rama while being hit. By the time Bertuzzi hit the ice, the puck beat Connor Hellebuyck and crossed the goal line.

Bertuzzi’s second came off a great forecheck by Mikheyev. When asked about his goals after the game, Bertuzzi said, “It’s Micky both times, he created the turnover.”

Big Lou Crevier

When Louis Crevier was drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft, no one cared. No one seemed to notice the 6-foot-8 French Canadian picked 188th in the NHL Entry Draft. Slowly, he worked his way up the ranks, through the AHL, and now… he’s flourished.

Crevier has become a fan favorite this season; his excellent defensive play and physicality draw attention. His offense has become a tool now. This season, Crevier has five goals and 16 assists. Over the last five games, he has four assists, and three in his last two contests. He’s been on fire this season, and it’s been fun to watch.

Overtime Woes

Part of building a winning culture is winning. The Chicago Blackhawks are still working on that part. Throughout this season, the team feels like it’s been dropping dead in the third period. This season, Chicago has the most blown leads with twenty games. In the third period its no better. The team ranks second only to the Pittsburgh Penguins, with 11 third-period leads blown.

But the teams’ inability to finish can be seen as a blessing or a curse. Right now, Chicago is projected to pick second in the 2026 NHL Draft, a position where they can take one of Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg. But imagine if the team had that clutch factor.

Chicago currently has 14 overtime losses, 4th in the league. Let’s say they win half of those games. Now they’re staring down a playoff spot with 75 points, playing meaningful hockey in March. Either way, Jeff Blashill summed it up best. “(We) Haven’t been good enough on 3-on-3, and it’s frustrating. Its frustrating for you guys, its frustrating for us, it’s frustrating for the players.”

The Chicago Blackhawks look to turn the tide on Thursday against former Chicago Blackhawks, Stan Bowman, Jason Dickinson, and Connor Murphy in Edmonton at 8 p.m Central Time.
