Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar is normally a chatty man.
He gives thoughtful answers to the media after nearly every question, helping fans learn more about the team.
On Wednesday night, Bednar didn’t really feel like talking. And who could blame him?
After the Avs laid an egg against the Vancouver Canucks, an embarrassing 8-6 loss to the NHL’s worst team, Bednar didn’t have much to say. He was clearly disappointed with how his squad played — even mad.

The key quote from Jared Bednar is the one featured in the post above.
“I think if we’re making excuses for that performance, it’s going to be a short run,” Bednar said.
Obviously, there’s tremendous pressure on the Avalanche to go deep into the playoffs and even win the Stanley Cup. Championship or bust can be a tough mindset in sports, but that’s the case for this year’s group.
They’re clearly the best team in the league and the standings reflect that. It’s almost certainly a matter of when, not if, they clinch the Central Division, Western Conference and Presidents’ Trophy.
But Jared Bednar also delivered an ominous warning in that message. If the Avalanche don’t focus properly come postseason time then their season will end way earlier than expected.
Yes, it’s hard to get up for a game in April against an awful hockey team, but Colorado was lacking effort against Vancouver. The league’s poorest team has no business scoring eight goals. It just can’t happen.
And with Mackenzie Blackwood getting pulled, questions remain if he’s a viable goaltender during the playoffs or if Bednar just needs to declare Scott Wedgwood the No. 1 guy.
Regardless, the head coach has to be feeling the heat. After all, if the Avs don’t hoist the Cup, Jared Bednar might be out of a job.
He wanted to make sure the players heard his frustrations loud and clear.
