The Montreal Canadiens have a chance to reach some historic milestones when they visit the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night in the first of a weekend home-and-home.
A win would get Montreal to eight straight, and also 100 points on the season for the 20th time in team history. The Habs haven’t reached the century mark in points since 2016–17.
Cole Caufield is on the verge of some history too, as he’s a goal shy of becoming Montreal’s seventh career 50-goal-scorer. The feat hasn’t been done since Stephane Richer had 51 in 1989–90. It would be fitting if Caufield a.k.a “Mr. Saturday Night” gets it done on Hockey Night in Canada this weekend.
The Devils have been playing some good hockey too with wins in seven of their last 10 outings. New Jersey remains far outside the East’s playoff picture with 80 points but crazier things have happened with seven games remaining in the regular season.
Puck drop at the Prudential Center goes at 7 p.m. EDT with the Canadiens a -120 moneyline favourite and the over-under at six on the NHL odds.
Canadiens vs. Devils NHL Betting Odds
New Jersey is a perfect 5-0 in their last five meetings with Montreal including a 4-3 overtime win back on November 6. Jesper Bratt scored the OT winner in that game and has 10 goals and 11 assists in 21 career games against Montreal.
The Habs are closing out a five-game road trip on Saturday against the Devils, a trip Montreal is a perfect 4-0-0 on. Montreal’s won seven straight games as they continue to chase down both home-ice advantage in the playoffs and even the top spot in the Atlantic Division.
The under has hit in five straight Montreal outings but that trend flips when they play the Devils; the over is 5-1 in Montreal’s last six trips to New Jersey. The Habs rank third in the NHL with 3.51 goals per game this season and have hit three goals in six of their last seven games.
Montreal Canadiens
Reuniting Cole Caufield with Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky on the Canadiens top line has made a word of difference for Montreal down the stretch of the regular season. Head coach Martin St. Louis made the move on March 6, and in the 15 games since the trio has combined for 30 goals and 68 points. Caufield’s scored 28 goals in his last 27 showings and is now one behind Nathan MacKinnon for the league lead in scoring. Elsewhere, rookie Ivan Demidov is on a four-game point streak and leads all rookies with 59 points on the season.
Montreal’s got quite a decision to make in net too come the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Jakub Dobes is the likely starter come Game 1 as he has a .903 save percentage in 38 games this season. But 21-year-old Jacob Fowler is doing his best to throw his name in the ring, as he’s put forth a .909 save percentage in five outings the last month. Both should get the crease this weekend.
New Jersey Devils
Jack Hughes is making the NHL look easy these days. Coming off 10 goals and 14 assists in the month of March, Hughes registered five goals in Thursday’s 7-3 win versus Washington. Hughes has four multi-goal games in the last month and is now up to 24 goals and 68 points in 54 games this season. He’s officially taken over Jesper Bratt as New Jersey’s leading scorer, as Bratt has 66 points on the season. Bratt also had five points in Thursday’s win.
Despite the seven wins over 10 games, the Devils playoff hopes still sit at 0.1 per cent according to MoneyPuck. Shaky goaltending hasn’t done the team any favours, but there’s been a direct correlation the Devils’ turnaround and Jake Allen receiving more starts. Allen has a .906 save percentage on the season in 34 games, compared to Jacob Markstrom’s .883 mark in 42 games. Expect both to play this weekend.
