The Colorado Avalanche host the St. Louis Blues on Sunday for the first of a consecutive series of games between these division rivals.

The Colorado Avalanche play on back-to-back nights when they host their division rivals, the St. Louis Blues, on Sunday night. This is the first game of consecutive games between these Central Division foes. The Blues will host the Avalanche in the season series finale on Tuesday. This will be an uphill battle for the Blues, who are fighting for their playoff lives against the best team in the league with 110 points. St. Louis has 76, but is five points out of the last wild card spot in the West. The problem for St. Louis is that four other teams are ahead of them. The first time these two met the Avalanche absolutely dominated 6-1 on New Year’s Eve at home. NHL goal-leader Nathan MacKinnon scored twice and added two assists, including his 400th career goal. Colorado outshot St. Louis 43-13 and Valeri Nichushkin netted a hat trick.

The Avalanche will play on back-to-back nights after beating their bitter rival, the Dallas Stars, on Saturday. Their 2-0 win tied the season series in the finale, and it was the first game of the season between those division foes that didn’t end in a shootout. The game didn’t have any goals through the first two periods, but Martin Necas ended that scoreless tie in the middle of the third period. MacKinnon added an empty-netter to put the cherry on top. Scott Wedgewood pitched a shutout against his former team, winning the second star with 17 saves. Now the Avalanche have an eight-point advantage over Dallas and moved that much closer to gaining home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Blues are coming off a big win on Friday against the Anaheim Ducks, 6-2. Dylan Holloway scored two goals on the power play and Robert Thomas scored a goal and added two assists. St. Louis won the series 2-1 in the process and more importantly kept their playoff hopes alive. Things got off to a slow start with the Ducks scoring in less than two minutes to begin the game. But Jonatan Berggren scored the go-ahead goal with 1:16 left in the first period and the Blues never looked back. It was the first goal of four consecutive for St. Louis. Unfortunately for the Blues, these back-to-back games against the league’s best team come at a terrible time.
