Porter Martone scored his first career NHL goal in overtime on Easter Sunday at Xfinity Mobile Arena and the building absolutely lost its mind.
The Flyers were on a 5-on-3 power play and Porter Martone found room in front of the net and sent the Easter Sunday crowd at Xfinity Mobile Arena into absolute chaos. The Flyers win 2-1 in overtime and climb into third place in the Metropolitan Division with five games left.
The postseason buzz is real in South Philly right now.
The Flyers are 39-26-12 with 90 points and hold the final playoff spot in the Metro. They went 14-5-1 in their last 20 games. They have a game in hand on the Islanders who sit one point back at 89. Columbus is at 88, Washington at 87.
The Flyers control their own destiny for third place and they have earned every bit of it.
Dvorak got things started at 4:19 of the first period when Porter Martone found him with a crafty touch pass for the opening goal. Dan Vladar was locked in all night, stopping 18 of 19 shots and only giving up a Pavel Zacha power play goal in the opening minute of the third period that tied it.
Vladar has allowed two goals total over his last two games and was named the third star. When he skated back onto the ice to accept it the crowd gave him everything they had.
Then overtime. 5-on-3 power play. Martone gets the puck, fires, scores. First career NHL goal. Easter Sunday. Playoff position. The kid who was at Michigan State three weeks ago just became a Flyers legend in the making.
Porter Martone had South Philly going CRAZY
Saturday night went completely the Flyers’ way while they watched from home. Detroit lost in regulation to Minnesota. Washington got blown out by the Rangers. The stars aligned and Sunday the Flyers showed up and took care of business themselves.
The Islanders sent shockwaves through the league Sunday by firing Patrick Roy and hiring Peter DeBoer with four games left. That franchise is in chaos.
The Flyers have a game in hand on New York and one point of separation. Ottawa won and holds the second wild card at 90 points alongside Philadelphia. The Metro third-place race is the one to focus on now and the Flyers are in the driver’s seat.
Five games left. In a playoff spot. Porter Martone just scored his first NHL goal in overtime on Easter Sunday to put the Flyers in playoff position. What a life.
