Everything in the last 24 hours had gone the Capitals’ way. They bludgeoned the Eastern Conference-leading Buffalo Sabres 6-3 at Capital One Arena on Saturday night. They got copious help from the out-of-town scoreboard. What for the longest time seemed like a lost season suddenly had life. A win against the New York Rangers on Sunday Night would put them just one point away from a playoff spot, a position that seemed impossible just a week ago.

After Connor McMichael tied things up in the first period off of a beautiful feed from Tom Wilson, Washington still had plenty to be optimistic about. They had played well in the game’s opening stanza, earning a 5v5 expected goals share of 62.25% per NaturalStatTrick. There was plenty of reason to believe the Caps were just a bounce away from swinging things firmly in their favor as they entered the second period.

And then, the Rangers scored.

And then they scored again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

And just like that, the hope that the Capitals could pull off the late-season turnaround was dashed as quickly as it had risen.

The season is far from over, of course. There are four games left, and they’ve done enough to remain three points back of the Philadelphia Flyers, who currently occupy the third spot in the Metropolitan Division, and the Ottawa Senators who now hold the second Wild Card spot. Mathematically, Washington can easily put themselves right back in the conversation. Spiritually, this loss was perhaps the most deflating they’ve had in a season that’s offered plenty to choose from.
