The Florida Panthers (37-37-3) will continue its five-game road trip and try to halt a two-game losing streak when they do battle with the Montreal Canadiens (45-22-10) tonight at Bell Centre to conclude the season series.
Florida followed up Saturday’s 9-4 lopsided loss in Pittsburgh by getting beaten again by the Penguins, this time by a 5-2 count on Sunday. Cole Schwindt scored his first goal since returning to the lineup to forge a 1-1 first period tie and Carter Verhaeghe beat Arturs Silvos from long range for a power-play goal late in the third for his 24th to complete the scoring. Fading backup keeper Danill Tarasov stopped 18 of 23 shots faced and Seth Jones, Vinnie Hinostroza and Gustav Forsling were credited with assists.
The usually high-flying Canadiens saw their eight-game winning streak come to end on Sunday as they were blanked 3-0 at Belle Centre by Jacob Markstrom and the New Jersey Devils in the back end of a weekend home-and-home. Montreal has already clinched a playoff spot and has hit the 100-point plateau for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. Nick Suzuki leads the team in scoring with 95 points and Cole Caufield is one marker away from his first 50-goal season.
