The Flyers went into Newark on Tuesday night and buried the Devils before they knew what hit them.
Trevor Zegras scored twice in the first three minutes and 38 seconds. The game was effectively over before New Jersey got comfortable on the bench. Final score 5-1. Win number 40. Three straight. Fifteen wins in the last 21 games. The Flyers have 92 points and are still in third place in the Metropolitan Division with four games left.
Trevor Zegras sets the tone for Flyers early…
Zegras finished with three points and now has 25 goals on the season. He is one point away from passing his career high of 65 set with the Ducks back in 2022-23. He set the new career high on his first goal Tuesday and immediately added to it on his second.
Tyson Foerster added two more in the second period and now has three goals in four games since coming back from an arm injury that kept him out for four months.
Matvei Michkov assisted both of Foerster’s goals and the Flyers are 9-0-0 on the season when Michkov records a multi-point game. Nick Seeler put it away with an empty netter from distance to close it out.
Vladar was locked in again. Twenty-three saves on 24 shots. Three goals allowed during the three-game win streak. New Jersey had a power play in the second period and tried to make it a game and Vladar stopped four shots in 31 seconds to end that conversation immediately. He has been the backbone of this entire run and he keeps delivering when it matters.
Porter Martone picked up an assist on the second goal for his fourth point in five games since signing his entry-level deal. The kid who was at Michigan State less than a month ago has four points in five NHL games.
Tocchet had rookies on three of their four lines Tuesday night with Martone on the second, Alex Bump on the third, and Denver Barkey on the fourth. Pretty remarkable for the hottest team in hockey, eh?
The standings are looking good. Two points up on Columbus who needed a shootout just to beat Detroit on Tuesday. Three points up on the idle Islanders. Five points clear of Washington. Third place in the Metro is ours to lose with four games left.
Detroit on Thursday. 7 PM.
