The New York Rangers are going through a retool this offseason, and we could see former 1st overall pick Alexis Lafrenière moved. With the team looking for extra help in the top six with the exit of Brock Boeser on the horizon, could they look into acquiring Lafreniere?GM Patrik Allvin will have to find a way to reinforce the Vancouver Canucks forward group, as Brock Boeser will be hitting free-agency in the summer.
President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford has given his word that the team will be relentless during free agency in order to improve the team.
“We’ll be aggressive,” Jim Rutherford said.
He added, “If we can make a deal and do whatever we need to do to improve our team, we’re going to do it.”
This promises to be a huge offseason for Allvin, who could make a splash. He’s been linked to multiple top-six forwards in the NHL already, including Trevor Zegras. But he could find a perfect Boeser replacement in the Rangers’ 1st OA pick in 2020, Alexis Lafreniere.
According to the Daily Hive’s Noah Strang he could be a target for the Canucks.
“Lafreniere scored 28 goals and 57 points in 82 games across the 2023-24 season with little power-play time. He’s shown the potential of being a high-end top-six play driver but hasn’t put it all together yet.
Could Vancouver be the place where he does so? He would definitely be expensive in terms of acquisition price but has the potential to be a star.” Strang said.
The Canucks have had their eyes on Lafreniere before but have failed to make a trade happen. This offseason could be different for GM Chris Drury and the Rangers as they have a mandate to improve the team, and that could involve some short-term pain, like moving Lafreniere.
The 23-year-old hasn’t found his game in New York, and only after one successful 57-point season, the hype train for the 1st OA in 2020 has run out of steam.
