The ‘future is bright’ for the Coachella Valley Firebirds

Coachella Valley will be younger next season, but should be very talented and exciting

The Seattle Kraken announced Monday that they have signed Ben Meyers, who was the Coachella Valley Firebirds leading scorer last season, to a one-year contract extension, keeping him with the organization through the 2025-26 season.

Meyers, who was set to be a free agent on July 1, will now stay with the Kraken. The one-year, one-way deal is worth $775,000, the same amount he made this season.

Meyers was a key player for the Firebirds in the 2024-25 season. In 57 games, he had 23 goals and 28 assists to lead the Firebirds with 51 points during the season. He had a goal and two assists in six playoff games.

The 26-year-old also played eight games with the Kraken this season but did not register a point. He’s played 75 total games in the NHL in his career, including stints with the Colorado Avalanche and Anaheim Ducks.

The Kraken continue to keep some of their veteran depth at the forward position as they also re-signed Firebirds mainstay John Hayden last week.

NHL free agency begins on July 1. Meyers and Hayden were among the big-name Firebirds players who will be up for free agency. That list includes Luke Henman, Brandon Biro, Gustav Olofsson, Max Lajoie, Nikolas Brouillard, Cale Fleury and Ales Stezka.

Another signing: The Kraken also signed 2023 fifth-round draft pick Kaden Hammell to a three-year, two-way contract. The 20-year-old defenseman played for Everett of the WHL last season scoring 38 points in 59 games.
