ABOUT THE SERIES

Puck Pioneers is a three-part series on women’s and girls’ hockey in Iowa. The first two parts of the series will profile three Iowans who each fell in love with hockey despite a different path to the game. The third part will discuss how the state can grow the sport.

This story begins with a pamphlet. It began circulating around elementary schools in Sioux County following the completion of Vernon Arena, a multipurpose recreational facility in Sioux Center.

The pamphlet advertised a rare opportunity for the youth of northwest Iowa — ice hockey.

Distributed by the Sioux Center Hockey Association (SCHA), it caught the attention of two individuals — one in Sioux Center and one in Hull — from a demographic even less likely to get the chance to play the sport more common to Iowa’s northern neighbor.

King, who graduated from Iowa last month, did not immediately start hockey after hearing about the opportunity. She remained in dance.

Instead, the Sioux Center product’s younger brother, Matthew, jumped at the opportunity to try it out. King, in third grade at the time, took notice of how much fun the sport looked when she watched her brother play.

“My parents just needed something to put my little brother, that is crazy, in,” King said. “Just give him something to do. … We are just a year apart, one grade apart, and when he joined hockey, I got jealous.”

After expressing her interest in hockey, King’s parents — Mike and Colleen — let Jenna do both hockey and dance the following year, but the next year gave her an ultimatum — pick one or the other.

“That is when I fell in love with the sport,” King said. “I needed to choose one, and decided to stick with hockey. Then, from there, I found my passion, found this love and I just wanted to continue being on the ice and being with the girls and the guys that I was surrounded by.”

Mike said it did not surprise him when his middle daughter said she also wanted to play hockey.

“She loved doing what her brother did,” Mike said. “She saw Matthew was having fun, and decided she wanted to try it, too”

Both from Minnesota, Colleen and Mike did not have any reservations about their kids trying the sport, which rivals any others in their home state.

“We wanted our kids to have a variety of opportunities and experience all the different sports and find their passion,” Colleen said.

Eventually, all four King children — Patty, Jenna, Matthew and Amanda — became hockey players.

“If I knew I was going to raise four hockey players, I would have never moved to Iowa,” Mike joked. “I would have stayed in Minnesota.”

Moore, who recently finished her sophomore year at Iowa State, shared a similar introduction to hockey after one of her friends at Boyden-Hull Elementary School encouraged her to try the sport in fourth grade.

“I did show some interest,” Moore said. “But, I did not know how to skate. That friend, he played since he was probably four. He convinced me to try it, learn how to skate. Then, we played together a couple of times and I just fell in love with the sport.”

Moore’s parents — Wade and Cherlynn Moore — saw a noticeable difference in the way she gravitated to hockey compared to other sports she tried.

“She was in some other sports,” Wade said. “She did not care for anything else. Then she tried out for hockey, and it was like, ‘Well, this is kind of fun.’

“We did not have hockey where we were from. It was like basketball or football. That was kind of the big things. It was new for us, not really knowing what we were getting into other than hearing there was a lot of action on the ice.”

Her affinity for the sport ratcheted up a notch when she tried out a new position: goalie. After strapping on the suit of armor accustom a netminder for the Sioux Center 12U team, Moore said she was hooked.

“Thank goodness I switched,” Moore said. “I love being a goalie. … My reason is really funny. The helmet that the players usually wear are too tight on my head. I changed to goalie because the helmet was a lot more comfortable and the fact that I was not the best skater at first. I was not very quick. I was not very big. … My coach at the time, he suggested that I try out for goalie because I think we only had one. … I am glad I was able to get the opportunity I did have.”

Cherlynn said she could tell quickly her daughter found goalie much more enjoyable than skating out.

“I knew she could handle it,” Cherlynn said. “She skated out those first few years and I could tell that really was not her deal. When she started playing goalie, I realized she found her niche. … I could tell she had found where she wanted to be.”

Cherlynn said she saw Moore’s desire to be and remain a goalie cemented by a tournament in Worthington, Minnesota.

“When they won that tournament, I think is kind of the defining moment when she was really excited to be in that position and be in hockey,” Cherlynn said.

Playing for one of just three hockey programs available to high school-aged girls in Iowa (Des Moines Lady Wild and Quad City Lady Blues are the other two), Moore and King found a very unique opportunity as members of the Sioux Center Storm.

“Hockey is definitely not popular where we are from,” King said. “It was an association not even part of the high schools we went to. It was just awesome that the rink (Vernon Arena) got built and they started promoting hockey more in the northwest Iowa area. With that promoting, it has had a lot of growth.”

Given the lack of popularity, the SCHA struggled to field a girls team during King and Moore’s time in the program.

They both started their hockey careers playing in teams consisting of boys and girls, and both joined the varsity girls hockey teams before they even reached middle school. In fifth grade, King joined the first high school-aged girls’ team offered by the SCHA.

Small — but mighty — King and Moore helped build the program.

“It was not easy,” King said. “We did lose a lot of games, and it was tough. Losing games is hard, even though winning and losing is not everything, but that was just very common for us. But, we knew it was for the better, for a bigger picture and to grow the program because you have to start somewhere.

“Allison and I were part of that starting point for Sioux Center Hockey. Once Allison and I kept growing up, got into high school, we started actually winning and starting being competitive and beating teams that we would never beat before.”

In the 2017-18 season, King and Moore helped the Storm win a South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association (SDAHA) junior varsity state title.

Now, the club fields a girls varsity and 14U team.

The SCHA, which was founded in 2003, competes in the SDAHA because the league features girls’ varsity teams from Aberdeen, Brookings, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Watertown.

King said her team noticed the SCHA’s outsider status to the SDAHA during league play despite an overall positive experience with the league.

“They (the SDAHA) welcome us, even though some South Dakota teams do not like us Iowans,” King said. “They were still very welcoming to our program and just gave us an opportunity to play hockey, which we are grateful for.

“Sioux Center hockey, northwest Iowa hockey, has just been able to work really well with the South Dakota league and be able to compete in that league for over 14-15 years.”

Moore said the team also felt some of the South Dakota team’s disdain.

“They do not like us whatsoever,” Moore said. “They are usually pretty civil off the ice, but on the ice they definitely hit us a bit harder than their own local South Dakota teams. I do not know why that is.”

Despite the obstacles, King and Moore said they appreciated the opportunities offered to them by the SCHA and the SDAHA.

“I had a very good experience growing up with the sport,” King said. “The hockey community is actually pretty small. You know a lot of people and make a lot of friends that you will remember forever, and those friendships last a lifetime.

“… I would say my junior and senior year were the most fun years of high school hockey because it was a great group of girls, our coaches were awesome and we were being successful within the varsity league of South Dakota Hockey.”

King added the friendships forged through hockey allowed her to broaden her horizons beyond just the peers she saw everyday in school.

“I was probably one of three girls that went to my high school that played hockey,” King said. “I also like the aspect that it was unique, that it was different, that I did not do something that everyone else was participating in in northwest Iowa. I fell in love with that.”

And, just as they shared an introduction to hockey, Moore said she shared a similar experience as a member of the SCHA.

“The community is great,” Moore said. “Especially back home in Sioux Center. I enjoyed all my time there. It was great. … I had a really good experience.”

Now, King and Moore both compete as members of the American College Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 2 club teams at their respective universities. The former teammates cite their positive experiences with the SCHA as major factors in their decisions to play the sport in college.

The opportunity and community helped build their love for the game, which compelled them to continue playing at the collegiate level while pursing their desired degrees.

For King, who majored in exercise science, the chance to continue playing hockey helped her land on Iowa.

“(I) did not think I was going to go here (Iowa),” King said. “But, my father mentioned I should look into it and then we also found out there was club hockey here. I was thinking, ‘Wow, I can do something that I love, also go to a Big Ten school and pursue a career and a path that is really well-known — the healthcare career fields are really great at the University of Iowa.’”

“I am so grateful that I did come to Iowa and have been able to be a part of this program and grow it. And, it is like your own built-in friends, being on a team, traveling with these girls, getting to get connections with your coaches and other teams as well has just been awesome, instead of me being a full-time student.”

And, she is thankful for the opportunity to remain on the ice in her home state beyond high school.

“This (hockey) has been a part of my life for over 15 years now” King said. “Even though I did not start playing hockey until third grade, I grew up skating on the pond up in Minnesota with my family. Those have just always been great memories. I am just taking it all in this senior year. … I just feel very, very blessed and really grateful for all the support from people that have poured into me over all these years of me playing hockey. It means a lot that I am able to continue these connections and continue to play something that I love and also leave a legacy with the new girls that come in and then continue to promote the sport at Iowa.”

In her final year with the Hawkeyes, King served as the club’s president and on-ice captain. She also helped the program transition from the Women’s Central Hockey League (WCHL), a league which draws from college club teams and community teams unaffiliated with colleges, to the exclusively collegiate ACHA in her final season.

“We are so proud to be part of that league,” King said. “It has definitely promoted and grown a lot of interest with girls that want to look into Iowa now. That was a huge step. That ACHA name alone can bring in a lot of people that want to paly hockey and that makes it possible for them to play.

Moore, who majored in animal science on a pre-veterinary track, also looked for a program which offered the chance to stay on the ice.

She first looked at Minnesota, which fields a varsity women’s hockey team and ACHA club team, but did not find what she was looking for until she visited Ames.

“I was searching for schools that had a pre-vet program and hockey on the side,” Moore said. “I went to Iowa State because they are very well-known for the animal science program, and they also had hockey, which was a bonus for me.”

The in-state opportunity for both also allowed for their parents to attend their games, which included road trips to La Crosse, Wisconsin; Fargo, North Dakota; Lincoln, Nebraska and Sioux Falls, South Dakota for Moore, and Champaign, Illinois; Duluth, Minnesota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Lincoln, Nebraska for King.

“It means a lot that they try to make every single game,” Moore said. “I still have that support. No matter where I am playing or how I am feeling, it is good to have my parents show up as well, and family members that want to make it. It means a lot to me.”

King and Moore also said it means a lot to both of them to see the SCHA and girls’ hockey continue to grow in their home community.

“The is interest is growing there,” King said. “When I went back home to watch my sister (Amanda), because she still plays for the Sioux Center Storm, there are a lot of little girls that look up to the older girls and they want to be like them.

“That was really impactful to see that these girls are really interested and really want to be part of the sport.”

Moore’s experience back home was similar.

“On my Christmas breaks, I have had the opportunity to see some of my younger friends play during their varsity games,” Moore said. “I am very happy to see that they are continuing with it. There are more girls coming up from 14U that really want to continue to play hockey and stick with the team.”
