Former Maple Leafs goalie Andrew Raycroft surprisingly optimistic about team’s future under Craig Berube and Brad Treliving, even following playoff struggles.

After yet another disappointing early playoff exit, many in Leafs Nation have called for meaningful change within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.

But, not everyone is down on the team. Former Leafs goalie Andrew Raycroft is voicing strong optimism about the club’s direction under head coach Craig Berube and GM Brad Treliving.

Appearing on the Clearing the Crease podcast, Raycroft shared his belief that the Leafs are poised for success – especially following the departure of Brendan Shanahan.

“I’m very bullish on the Toronto Maple Leafs after moving on from Brendan Shanahan, having Brad Treliving and Craig Berube in charge. Especially how close this Toronto Maple Leafs team was to this Florida Panthers team, taking them to 7 games.”

“There’s a couple guys the Maple Leafs can pick up in free agency. A Brad Marchand or a Sam Bennett – unload the bank on one of those two guys, which could flip the winning culture from Florida to Toronto.”

Raycroft makes a fair point. The Leafs did take the Florida Panthers to seven games, whereas Florida made quick work of the Carolina Hurricanes in their series, winning 4-1.

Marchand, the perfect playoff-style player with championship pedigree, would be a much tougher sell in Toronto. As a long-time nemesis of the organization, seeing him in blue and white would be jarring – no matter how effective he might be. Age is also a factor. Still,he seems to be on the team’s radar.

The team took a major step in its intensity and structure under Craig Berube, and if the new additions can embrace the identity instilled by the coach, the Leafs may take yet another meaningful step next year.
