Elliotte Friedman has recently made an intriguing statement involving the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins.

It lines up with the rumour currently making the rounds.

A suggestion from another NHL insider caught his attention.

“Someone else told me you know who they thought might be a really good fit in Montreal?”

Friedman then revealed the two names in question.

“One of those two Pittsburgh wingers: Rust or Rakell” Friedman said, putting both veterans into the conversation.

Two interesting options for a team looking to add offensive talent.

Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell remain on Montreal’s radar

The idea makes plenty of sense based on the Canadiens’ needs.

Montreal has been looking for some time to surround its young core with established, reliable offensive players.

Rust and Rakell both fit that profile.

They’re experienced wingers who can contribute in several areas… And they’ve both recently returned to the spotlight:

“Josh Yohe: Re Penguins: There’s little doubt [Kyle Dubas] thought he’d be able to move up in the first round of the draft – maybe trade Bryan Rust or Rickard Rakell.” – The Athletic

So the idea that both players could be available in exchange for future assets is nothing new.

Rust or Rakell in a Canadiens jersey would be interesting.

Will Kent Hughes seriously explore that avenue?
