Seattle Kraken winger and pending UFA Brandon Tanev shares cryptic comment about potentially coming to Toronto to play for the Maple Leafs with brother, Chris Tanev. While a lot of focus tends to shift towards the top free agent targets like Mitch Marner and Sam Bennett, there remains several underrated and somewhat unnoticed players that could help a contending team like the Toronto Maple Leafs almost immediately.

Tanev brings that rugged, physical, gritty sandpaper element that the Leafs covet, and he should assuredly be a target of theirs come July 1st.

We’re still a ways away from the free agent window opening, but perhaps the stars might be aligning a little sooner than expected, with Tanev dropping a few cryptic remarks about possibly joining the Leafs this summer.

It’s as close as you’ll get at this time of the year to anything resembling confirmation, but with the Leafs already employing his brother, Chris, and the Tanev’s being natives of Toronto, it almost makes too much sense.

The Leafs have also been desperately trying to fill out their bottom-6 in recent years and their game of musical chairs can stop for the foreseeable future by bringing the consistent veteran into the fold. Adding Tanev alongside Scott Laughton could go a long way in helping balance things out beyond the top two lines.

The 33-year-old is a 10-year veteran with 84 goals and 180 points across 522 games split between Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. He posted a career-high 16 goals and 35 points in 2022-23, but has failed to rediscover that scoring touch since.

Perhaps with a bit of an expanded role in Toronto, as well as playing in his hometown, Tanev can get things back on track. While the scoring might be down, he remains a consistent provider of hits with 1,588 throughout his career, including 506 in his last 4 seasons to go along with 235 blocked shots.

Signing Tanev would be a massive get for the Maple Leafs and it also helps that he shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.
