The last player out of Detroit will need to turn off the lights. Yet another talented player has had enough of the inept Detroit Red Wings organization and would prefer a trade. The Florida Panthers provided an update on Sasha Barkov and are crossing their fingers that he will play again this season. The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a minor trade, and it matches with the Pittsburgh Penguins. And we have the full breakdown of the chaotic, wild, fun Penguins win over the Montreal Canadiens.
Yep, I made a mistake in the postgame. I thought Evgeni Malkin scored the winner, not Tommy Novak. Anyone ever tried to publish a postgame at the final horn when the teams won’t stop scoring? Sometimes, you have mere moments to look up at the TV screen, see who scored, type it, and run to the dressing room. Such was the case Saturday, but boy howdy are the Novak fans rushing to defend their guy (who was, in fact, on the wrong side of the puck quite a bit Saturday).
The payoff of getting to the room on time was a conversation that a couple of us had with Erik Karlsson about the offside call (before the media throng encircled us). Most of the media folks missed it, but PHN got the good stuff, and it’s in the report card. He told us what he said to the referees and what they told him. I’d say he won the argument but lost the war. You can listen to the convo below:
Erik Karlsson had some beauties about his offside call. I should have taken video, but we wanted to talk without the pressure of a camera in his face…and he didn’t disappoint: pic.twitter.com/Hbpkq6CjaZ

Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The postgame. A quick synopsis, then what happened on every goal in the Penguins’ win.
And the report card is full of analysis and some sharp grades. It also has our entire conversation with Erik Karlsson about why he wasn’t offside. Unless you get entirely oversensitive defending Tommy Novak, it’s a good Penguins report card.
The Penguins activated Ben Kindel and placed David Gustafsson on waivers Saturday. And I did not get out of the arena until 1 a.m. because I redid the postgame video…twice. It took a couple of moments to mentally pull all of that together because it was not only chaos but entirely different games within the game.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Detroit Hockey Now: Next up on the Get Me Outta Here carousel in Detroit is RFA defenseman Simon Edvinsson. He did the team a solid by signing a PTO to participate in training camp so his people could negotiate a new deal, but when they failed, he went home to Sweden. Now, Edvinsson has essentially told Detroit, just trade me.
Detroit is becoming an embarrassment. If a young defenseman in the minors is worth $7 million a year now, just shut up and pay the man his money.
Sportsnet Video: Colby Armstrong on Hockey Night in Canada as part of the Headlines segment, and he immediately chirped Elliotte Friedman about his contract. Gotta love it. If you want to watch the genesis of the rumors today–here you go.
Florida Hockey Now: It might not be season-ending. The Florida Panthers are crossing their fingers pending the latest update on Sasha Barkov.
Philly Hockey Now: Guess how many wins the Philadelphia Flyers have after three games? If you guessed as many as none, you are correct. They were better against Carolina, but … the Flyers lost again.
The first six weeks of the season used to be a warmup, now the NHL season is more like an F1 race. You need to get out in front quickly, or you’re stuck in the pack for the remainder of the race.
Sportsnet: Longtime NHL defenseman, including Pittsburgh Penguin, Lyle Odelein, who has lived in Pittsburgh since his playing days, unfortunately passed away at 58 years old.
NHLtraderumors.me: Circling back to that young defenseman in Anaheim who had played just 14 NHL games and got the whopper of a contract, he was reportedly “shocked” to get the contract. Hey, when they offer, you sign it.
