Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers made (minor) headlines on Tuesday when they inked forward Michael Bunting to a 1-year, $1.2 million deal. It has been a far less-than-ideal start for the Flyers on both ends of the ice. Tuesday’s signing should send a message to the team’s roster that they have not been good enough.
Speaking of that signing, someone had to be loaned/waived to make room for the newly signed Bunting. Instead of loaning the previously cleared Carl Grundstrom or even the yet-to-play Garrett Wilson, the Flyers landed on loaning rookie winger Alex Bump to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms after a disappointing start. Did Bump make the roster based on last year’s contributions?
The Flyers are still in search of their first win of the season. After starting their season with a loss, followed by back-to-back overtime losses, the Flyers were still hunting their first win when they started the 3-game road trip in Tampa Bay. Now, they’ll enter Thursday’s matchup with teh Ottawa Senators with a monkey on their back. Will they find a way to get it off in Game 5? More to come on Thursday’s game when our preview drops later.
NHL Trade Rumors & News
Let’s start with Wednesday’s trade.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins and GM Kyle Dubas are starting to unclog their logjam. Dubas traded center/forward Filip Hallander to the Edmonton Oilers for LHD Spencer Stastney. Hallander is a promising young forward, but the Penguins have a logjam with their forward depth. AGM Jason Spezza explains Tuesday’s deal and why Hallander was “expendable”.
Sportsnet: Now, for the flip side of the trade. The Edmonton Oilers received Hallander in the deal. Sportsnet’s Mark Spector explained why it was a low-risk deal for the Oilers as they try to round out their forward corps as the young season approaches the long grind.
TSN: Sticking with the Oilers, even after acquiring Devon Levi over the summer, they are still in need of a goaltender. Most notably, Connor Hellebuyck is available for trade and seems like an obvious fit for a team that has always been a goalie away from Lord Stanley. However, Pierre LeBrun says you can cross Hellebuyck off the list of possibilities, as the goaltender “will not play in Canada.”
New Jersey Hockey Now: It’s been an uphill battle for New Jersey Devils prospect Matyas Melovsky in his professional career. Daniel Amoia breaks down how he keeps defying the odds in his journey to the NHL.
San Jose Hockey Now: San Jose Sharks captain Macklin Celebrini is missing time due to a lower-body injury. TSN and The Athletic’s Chris Johnston reported that Celebrini had been managing the injury through training camp, indicating the Sharks knew. Head Coach Ryan Warofsky denied knowing of any injury, and Johnston walked back his statement, claiming he “misspoke”. Sheng Peng has the latest on Celebrini.
Boston Hockey Now: Another contract dispute. Could it lead to another big-name trade? The Boston Bruins and center Pavel Zacha “haven’t been close” in extension negotiations. His name has even surfaced in trade talks. Could another big-name be on the move early this season?
