NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has given an update on a report that links Manny Malhotra to the Dallas Stars to become their next Head Coach after they fired Pete DeBoer.

While the Vancouver Canucks could see some big changes this summer with their roster that NHL level, the team might also need to search for a new Head Coach for their American Hockey League affiliate in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford Canucks Head Coach and former Vancouver Canuck Manny Malhotra has done a fantastic job in his first season as a bench boss, leading his team to their first-ever Calder Cup Final where they’ll face the Charlotte Checkers, AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers.

Elliotte Friedman gives update on rumors regarding Manny Malhotra & the Dallas Stars

Following the firing of Pete DeBoer last Friday, there have been some reports linking Manny Malhotra to the Dallas Stars vacancy, with Betonline.ag giving him the best odds at 3/1 to land the job.

On Monday, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman was a guest on Donnie & Dhali where he gave an update on Manny Malhotra potentially being in the mix for the Dallas Stars vacancy.

According to Friedman, he isn’t sure if Manny Malhotra is on Dallas’ list or radar at this time, however, he is the type of coach that the Stars are looking to bring in, as he believes they’re looking for a newer, fresh voice behind the bench.

“As we sit here right now and do your show, I can’t say for sure that he’s [Malhotra] on Dallas’ list, but what I can say is that he fits the profile of the type of coach Dallas is looking at. Dallas is interested in going, I don’t know if off the board is the right word, but maybe fresh.” Friedman said.

Malhotra, 45, has a bit of experience coaching at the NHL level, albeit in an assistant role with the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs and given the work he’s done with Abbotsford this season, even if he doesn’t land the Dallas Stars job, he’ll certainly be in the mix to join an NHL bench at some point in the near future.

There are a handful of Assistant Coaching vacancies around the National Hockey League at this time as well, so perhaps he could take on that role he’s held in the past and leave the Canucks organization this summer, but it’s hard to say for certain if that’ll end up happening.
