Hockey HOFer Mario Lemieux reportedly is “interested in buying back” the Penguins from Fenway Sports Group, according to Matt Vensel of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. TSN on Wednesday reported that Lemieux and businessman Ron Burkle are “investigating the possibility” of reacquiring the Penguins, which they owned from 1999-2021, from Fenway Sports Group. The report said that David Morehouse, who served as Penguins president for 15 years, is “also part of the group that is looking into whether the team is for sale.” However, FSG in a statement said that it “does not wish to sell control of the team.” FSG added it is “currently engaged in a process to explore a potential minority investment” in the Penguins, with the focus on “identifying a small, passive partner, and that is the current framework under discussion with potential investors.” FSG purchased the Penguins for a reported $900M (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/11).
