The latest twist in the ongoing breakup between Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs appears to have hit the non-profit sector.

According to YYZSportsMedia’s Jonah Sigel, Marner’s charity — known as the Marner Assist Foundation — is cancelling its annual summer event in Toronto, originally set for next month.

“After thoughtful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event, scheduled for July 10 and 11. The uncertainty around Mitch’s summer schedule makes it challenging to plan responsibly. Out of respect for the time and commitment of our partners and supporters, we feel it’s best to make this decision now,” the statement read as shared by Sigel.

“While we are disappointed not to come together this year, the Foundation will continue to honour all its commitments to charitable partners. We remain deeply grateful for the community.”

Multiple reports have suggested that conversation has ceased between the Leafs and Marner, with the strong belief that he’ll leave the franchise in free agency this summer.

Marner has spent his whole career with the Leafs since being taken fourth overall in the 2015 Draft. He put up a career-high 102 points in the regular season this past year, before following that up with 13 points in 13 playoff games. In 657 career games with the Leafs, he’s put up 221 goals and 520 assists.

The Toronto Sun’s Lance Hornby stated that attempts to contact the venue directed them back to Marner’s foundation.

A video on the Marner Assist Foundation website shares The Salvation Army, Lumenus, Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart, 360° Kids, Second Harvest, and the Muskoka Woods Foundation as charities the organization has worked with in the past. The Marner All-Star Invitational had taken place every year since 2018, save for a COVID-19 break in 2020.

“The goal of the Marner Assist Foundation is to generate sustainable change for children and youth by providing resources that will make a significant impact on their lives,” a mission statement on the foundation’s website reads. “The focus is to provide assistance in the areas of children’s social care, health, education, as well as supporting environmental causes to ensure our children have a sustainable future.”
