Maxim Shabanov has been playing in his native Russia for Traktor Chelyabinsk for the last eight seasons. The 24-year-old left-shot winger had his best season to date with 23 goals and 44 assists in 67 games with Traktor. The 5-foot-8, 157-pound forward is slight in build but plays an aggressive style. NHL teams might have some trepidation due to his stature; however, his skill set continues to improve.

At least 12 NHL teams have inquired about Shabanov’s willingness to leave the KHL, with the Boston Bruins among the group. The Bruins are in need of an offensive scoring punch, and the current free agency list seems to be dwindling, causing the Bruins to look for creative options outside of the United States. Former NHLer Max Comtois has been rumored to be connected to Boston, and the Bruins just signed defenseman Victor Soderstrom after acquiring the former Arizona Coyote via trade.
Shabonov has the speed and skill to potentially be a middle-six forward in the NHL if his body can hold up to the physicality. The Bruins have been adding size and heaviness to their lineup lately, and center Matt Poitras and winger Fabian Lysell are already on the smaller side. But it might be worth a shot on a one-year deal to see what Maxim Shabonov brings to the table.
