With the NHL’s off-season in full swing, one former Maple Leafs defenseman has found himself placed on waivers for the purpose of a buyout after a dreadful season.

The NHL’s buyout window is officially open and it is expected that a number of teams will look to take advantage of it to free up some cap and roster space ahead of free agency on July 1st.

T.J. Brodie’s NHL Future is in Question After Reports of a Buyout in Chicago

On Saturday, the Chicago Blackhawks placed the aforementioned Brodie on waivers for buyout purposes. After just one season with the Blackhawks, the 35-year-old will be looking for a new home once again, though there’s no guarantee that one will be available to him in the twilight of his career and clear signs that he’s declining at a rapid rate.

After his buyout, Chicago will save just over $500K this season, seeing his cap hit drop to $3.233M and the team will also be charged with a cap penalty of $258K next season.

Once a mainstay in the top 4 for the Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames, Brodie has struggled mightily the past two seasons, finishing with 2 goals and 10 points and a minus -18 rating in only 54 games for Chicago this past year.
