The Maple Leafs’ latest offer to pending unrestricted free agent John Tavares is causing some tension between the two sides with free agency creeping closer.

Leafs’ Latest Offer ‘Non-Starter’ for John Tavares

While Tavares won’t sign for under $5M, that didn’t stop Brad Treliving from trying. On Saturday, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta revealed that the Leafs attempted to low-ball Tavares, reportedly offering him a 3-year deal worth less than $4M per season.

Previous reports have been consistent in citing that the Leafs are willing to go with a longer term to bring the cap hit down, so the 3-year deal was likely an empty attempt to see if the 34-year-old would consider a very significant pay cut without tying up more years of cap space.

As free agency is now just over a week away, time is running out for the Leafs and Tavares to find common ground on an extension, which means the Leafs may be losing two members of their Core 4 come July 1st.
