A Western Conference contender reportedly has a major trade pending in order to clear a significant amount of cap space to allow them to take a run at Mitch Marner.

The 31-year-old has five years left on his current deal with a cap hit of $8.1M, but with San Jose retaining part of it in the trade, Vegas was only on the hook for $6.75M.

Should they be able to move Hertl and his $6.75M, the Golden Knights will have $16.35M in space and potentially more than $20M should Pietrangelo not be able to play this season.

This is nothing out of the ordinary for Vegas, as they are one of the few teams in the league that take big swings year after year in the hopes of winning another Stanley Cup.

Given the complexity of deals of this magnitude, however, as D’Amico noted, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the trade finalized over the weekend at the draft.
