VIENNA — A new recreational opportunity will be available at Jackson Park in Vienna.
During Thursday’s Vienna City Council meeting, councilmembers discussed and then unanimously approved a resolution accepting the donation and installation of an outdoor hockey rink and equipment for placement at Jackson Park.
The Vienna Recreation and Improvement Association is doing the rink project with support from the Minnite Family Charitable Fund and the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.
The outdoor hockey rink will include dasher boards, barrier netting, and goals, all of which are designed for safe, outdoor public use. The proposed location for the rink is the asphalt surface adjacent to the existing basketball courts at Jackson Park, an area suitable for both ball hockey and roller hockey without the need for surface modifications, according to the resolution.
The rink will be open to the public and available for use by all visitors to Jackson Park. Installation of the rink will be carried out by VRIA volunteers at no cost to the city and the structure will require no significant ongoing maintenance or upkeep by the city.
With the approval of Thursday’s resolution, the work can begin soon and is expected to be finished within a few weeks, Mayor Chad Emrick said following the meeting.
Also during Thursday’s meeting, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 79 accepted a donation from Sterling Packaging in Mineral Wells of $1,000 for its summer pool party and $1,500 for its Shop with a Cop program during the Christmas season.
The 2025 Vienna Freedom Festival will be today and Saturday at Spencer’s Landing with live entertainment and various activities.
The next regular council meeting will be July 10 at 6 p.m.
