With NHL free Agency officially kicking off in just a few days, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin has a lot of pressure to make big improvement to the roster, but he may have even bigger issues ahead with Captain Quinn Hughes.
Even though there are more moves ahead coming, the Canucks still have a big obstacle ahead when dealing with the uncertainty of Captain Quinn Hughes signing once his contract expires in 2027.
Vancouver Canucks reportedly unable to sign Captain Quinn Hughes to a 8-year contract
Obviously with confirmed reports stating Quinn Hughes would like to play alongside his brothers Jack and Luke one day, it has created a lot of angst for the Canucks fan base.
But, there is another reason why Vancouver will not be able to extend Hughes for eight more years even one free agency commences on July 1st.
It currently stands that the max contract a player can sign is an 8-year deal (only if re-signing with their current team), otherwise it is 7-years.
However, news broke that the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to a new framework of that would come with a number of changes, including a reduction in the maximum number of years that a player can sign with a team.
According to a report from The Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, one of the provisions in the four-year extension to the CBA would limit the term of contracts to seven years for players re-signing with their current team and six years for players signing with a different team in free agency.
Because this is only kicking in once Hughes is eligible for a contract in 2027, he will be under the new CBA rules, meaning that if they can’t get a deal done now, then there will be no way they can sign him to a eight-year contract.
Players signed in free agency next week will be under the old agreement. By the time Hughes is eligible for a contract extension with the Canucks, it will be under the new agreement, limiting the maximum length of Hughes’ contract to seven years. – Daniel Wagner
At the end of the day, it is unclear if Hughes is wanting to stay or go, but Allvin and the Canucks will have to showcase that their is a clear path ahead to competing for a cup because there is now ay that he is sticking around for a rebuild.
