With the Stanley Cup Finals in the rearview mirror, the NHL is officially in offseason mode with the 2025 NHL Draft set to take place on Friday evening in Los Angeles. The New York Islanders hold the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft after winning the NHL Draft Lottery last month.
With the top pick, the Islanders are expected to select Erie Otters (OHL) defenseman Matthew Schaefer, widely regarded as the top prospect in this draft class. Schaefer was limited to just 17 games with Erie due to a bout of mononucleosis and a broken collarbone that was suffered at the World Junior Championship in December. The Islanders are undergoing organizational changes this offseason as the the team parted ways with Lou Lamoriello and replaced him with Mathieu Darche.Â
In addition to Schaefer, there is plenty of high-end talent that will be selected on Friday. Saginaw Spirit (OHL) forward Michael Misa could go right after Schaefer with the second overall pick, which is owned by the Chicago Blackhawks. It’s also a very center-heavy draft class at the top featuring James Hagens (Boston College), Anton Frondell (Djugardens, Sweden), Caleb Desnoyers (Moncton Wildcats, QMJHL) and Brady Martin (Soo Greyhounds, OHL), who could all be picked in the top 5-10 selections.
CBS Sports will have you covered with everything that unfolds from Los Angeles on the opening night of the NHL Draft.
