Today is the second day of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, rounds two through seven, after last night’s marathon round one highlighted by the top overall pick Matthew Schaefer‘s memorable and heartfelt reaction. Our news right now is to report a draft impacting trade between the Ottawa Senators and the Los Angeles Kings. Ottawa receives defenceman Jordan Spence in the trade, while the Kings received a third-round pick today (67th overall) and a sixth rounder in the 2026 draft.

What Is Ottawa Getting in the Jordan Spence Trade

Jordan Spence is an interesting commodity to acquire. However, being that he is a right-shot defenceman, he is a great supporting cast member to the Sens current roster. Last season in Los Angeles he played 16:47 on average per game. Furthermore, he primarily played with Vladislav Gavrikov, conveniently someone who has been the topic of rumours of looking for a big payday in free agency. So, it seems the dots were being connected by general manager Steve Staios.

Spence has recorded eight goals and 61 points in 180 games so far during his young career. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round, 95th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Spence had four goals and 24 assists in 79 games last year. Not bad production for that amount of ice time. Moreover, he did spend some time of the power play, so that helps to boost his offensive upside.

The Senators Perspective

This is a great depth move for Ottawa. There is uncertainty if Travis Hamonic will be re-signed. He seems like a good player to pair with Thomas Chabot. Furthermore, given the question mark with Nick Jensen following off-season surgery, the Sens had it on their list. The move ticks off one of the many boxes on Steve Staios’ to do list this offseason. Next will be to focus in on pending free agent Claude Giroux.
