Sylvanie - USA TODAY Sports" decoding="async" fetchpriority="high"/>Stephen R. Sylvanie – USA TODAY Sports The Vancouver Canucks kicked off their trade deadline moves by sending Carson Soucy to the New York Rangers on Thursday. While Soucy wasn’t exactly a mistake for the Canucks, the team’s defense has leveled up around him — making him the odd man out.

Canucks Clear Cap Space with Carson Soucy’s Trade

The 30-year-old defenseman signed a three-year, $9.75-million contract with Vancouver two summers ago. But after struggling to handle bigger minutes this season during Filip Hronek’s injury absence, the writing was on the wall — especially after the Canucks added Marcus Pettersson from Pittsburgh in January as part of the J.T. Miller trade.
With Elias Pettersson (the younger one) stepping up from the AHL sooner than expected and Soucy finding himself a healthy scratch twice in February, it seemed only a matter of time before a move happened. And after a little persuasion from J.T. Miller himself, Soucy waived his no-trade clause to join the Rangers in exchange for a third-round pick.

What does this mean for the Canucks’ trade plans?

The real kicker? The Canucks aren’t retaining any of Soucy’s $3.25-million cap hit, giving them extra breathing room heading into next season. That third-round pick — originally from San Jose — might not be in Vancouver’s pocket for long either. GM Patrik Allvin has a history of flipping picks quickly, and with the deadline looming, the Canucks could be gearing up for another move.
They’re reportedly listening to offers for Brock Boeser, Pius Suter, and Derek Forbort — all set to hit free agency this summer. And in a twist that’s raising eyebrows, there’s even chatter about star forward Elias Pettersson. While a trade for him seems more likely in the offseason, the fact that his name is floating around shows just how wide-open the Canucks’ plans are.
Despite the chaos, Vancouver is still fighting for a playoff spot. They face the Minnesota Wild on Friday night, hoping to build some momentum and shake off a rocky season.
But with a sellers’ market heating up and the clock ticking, the Canucks are clearly keeping their options open. Whether they offload more pending free agents or make a blockbuster move, this deadline could be a wild ride for Vancouver fans.
Buckle up — the Canucks are far from done.
Also read – Brendan Brisson’s Adorable Connection to Sidney Crosby and His New Start with the Rangers

Stephen R.
