Utah Mammoth, American professional ice hockey<\/a> team based in Salt Lake City<\/a>, Utah, that competes in the Western Conference of the NHL<\/a>. The team began play as an expansion team in the 2024\u201325 season.<\/p>\n

Billionaire tech businessman and Utah resident Ryan Smith started making inquiries about bringing an expansion NHL team to the state in 2020. An opportunity to do so arose in 2023 when Alex Meruelo, the owner of the Arizona Coyotes<\/a>, was unable to find a permanent home arena in the Phoenix<\/a> area for the team. In early 2024 the NHL facilitated<\/a> a deal in which Smith and his wife, Ashley Smith, purchased the Coyotes\u2019 \u201chockey assets\u201d\u2014namely, the contracts of its players, coaches, and other staff\u2014and Meruelo retained the right to the Coyotes\u2019 name and history, enabling the Coyotes franchise to be revived in the future. (The deal was roughly analogous<\/a> to the formation of the NFL<\/a>\u2019s Baltimore Ravens<\/a> out of the Cleveland Browns<\/a> in 1996, in which the newly formed Ravens were essentially a relocated Browns team, but Cleveland kept the Browns\u2019 name, history, and colors for a future replacement team.)<\/p>\n

The NHL\u2019s board of governors approved the sale of the Coyotes and the creation of the Utah Hockey Club on April 18, leaving less than six months to get the team up and running before the regular-season opener on October 8. The Delta Center arena, home of the NBA<\/a>\u2019s Utah Jazz<\/a>, also owned by the Smiths, was announced as the team\u2019s home arena, and renovations were begun to accommodate<\/a> ice hockey competition. In June it was revealed that the team\u2019s temporary name would be the \u201cUtah Hockey Club\u201d for the 2024\u201325 season.<\/p>\n

The new team\u2019s roster and coaching staff are largely unchanged from that of the Coyotes\u2019 2023\u201324 team. The head coach is Andr\u00e9 Tourigny, and the team captain is forward Clayton Keller. It had a 38\u201331 record in its inaugural season.
