The Phillies, Eagles and Flyers all lost within 2 1/2 hours of each other, making history as one of the worst nights the city’s fans have experienced in more than four decades.

The Phillies were eliminated from the MLB playoffs, with the Los Angeles Dodgers winning Game 4 of the NLDS 2-1 in 11 innings at Dodger Stadium. On the road at the 1-4 New York Giants in a key divisional matchup, the Eagles played their worst game of the season in a 34-17 loss. And to cap it all off, the Flyers lost their season opener 2-1.

It was the first time since Oct. 16, 1983, that the Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers all lost on the same day, according to sports statistician Greg Harvey. Sports reporter Bob Vetrone Jr. reported it was the eighth time that all three teams played on the same day.

The City of Brotherly Love is no stranger to days of sports heartbreak. On Nov. 5, 2022, the Phillies and the Philadelphia Union of the MLS both suffered championship losses on the same day.

The Union lost the MLS Cup to LAFC and a mere five hours later, the Phillies fell in Game 5 of the World Series as the Houston Astros clinched the title. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it was the first time that a city had lost two championships in one day.

On the pitch, the loss was particularly gut-wrenching. The Union took a 3-2 lead late in extra time, before LAFC equalized for the latest goal in MLS history and later won on penalty kicks.

In the painful events of Thursday, it was the Phillies that suffered the most brutal defeat. With the bases loaded, two outs and the score tied 1-1, Philadelphia reliever Orion Kerkering fielded a groundball from Andy Pages. Instead of throwing to first for the final out, he made an errant throw home, and just like that, the Phillies’ season was over.

THE @DODGERS WALK IT OFF AND ARE #NLCS BOUND! pic.twitter.com/7GKwsscWkZ

— MLB (@MLB) October 10, 2025

After a sad day in the Philadelphia sports world, the dismayed reactions of fans and local media were all over social media. Local sports talk radio host Joe Giglio discussed the Phillies’ loss on 94WIP. “I’m dejected. I’m sad. And I do feel like this was the end.
