Following a humiliating loss in which the Oilers were outscored 9-1 to the Avalanche, the Edmonton media criticized the team’s leadership for not being front and centre.<\/p>\n

Oilers’ core avoids speaking with media<\/p>\n

If we didn’t see any of the Oilers’ core-group speaking with the media post-game last night, it’s probably because they were hanging there heads in the locker-room, replaying in their minds the horror-show they’d just witnessed.<\/p>\n

Or it could be there just wasn’t anything to really say; I mean, what could they say.<\/p>\n

\u00abI definitely hope this is rock bottom for us,\u00bb Oilers’ head coach Kris Knoblauch said after the game. \u00abI hope this wakes up a lot of guys and we understand that we’ve got a lot of growing to do to become a good hockey team, like our expectations are for ourselves\u00bb<\/p>\n

If it smells like rock-bottom, and looks like rock-bottom, chances are it is. And when you score 1 goal to the other team’s 9, someone or everybody is not doing their job.<\/p>\n

Edmonton has scored just 26 goals to start this season, an average goals for per hour rate of 2.2 and are generating just 2.3 expected goals for per hour – the fifth-worst in the league.<\/p>\n

So, they’re not scoring enough goals and not creating good scoring chances.<\/p>\n

And when you’re only controlling 48.6% of the expected goal share when the league-average is 56.8%, you’re chasing the game. Oilers’ scoring chance share has gone from 56.5% to 46.6%, and the high-danger scoring chance share has gone from 59.85% to 46.8%.<\/p>\n

These are all things that McDavid, Draisaitl, Skinner and company could have said post-game, but didn’t. Then again, whatever numbers one attaches to a 9-1 loss can only verify what is already obvious to anyone that watched the game – the team is performing poorly in pretty much every department.<\/p>\n

If the Oilers have in fact hit rock-bottom, then up is the only way they can go. Getting embarrassed by Colorado might be what they needed for a reality check, and to start winning games.<\/p>\n
