How’s this for an all-Canada NHL trade rumor?<\/p>\n

The Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> and Winnipeg Jets<\/a> are believed to be the top-two contenders to land a forward from the Edmonton Oilers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s the kind of move that may not make headlines south of the Canadian border but would be a big trade up north.<\/p>\n

The player rumored to be on the block is Andrew Mangiapane, the 29-year old Oilers forward.<\/p>\n

The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun<\/a> thinks Mangiapane would be a fit for the Jets.<\/p>\n

“Made a healthy scratch earlier this week by the Oilers, the writing appears to be on the wall for the 29-year-old winger in Edmonton. It just hasn\u2019t been a fit,” LeBrun writes. “… Give me the Jets. They\u2019re dying for any kind of secondary scoring. I think the fact Mangiapane has another year on his deal would actually be appealing to the Jets, whose playoff chances are certainly in trouble for this season but far from done.”<\/p>\n

LeBrun’s colleague, Chris Johnston<\/a>, believes that the Maple Leafs make more sense.<\/p>\n

“Toronto is low on draft capital and knows it\u2019s going to have a tough time chasing upgrades at the trade deadline as a result,” Johnston writes. “The acquisition cost in this case will likely be negligible. Plus, Mangiapane is only one year removed from a season with the Washington Capitals<\/a> that included some encouraging stretches of play. It\u2019s also worth noting that the player has a favorable history with Leafs GM Brad Treliving dating back to their time together in Calgary. If you\u2019re going to take a risk, it\u2019s always easier to do it on a known commodity.”<\/p>\n

Last season, Mangiapane had 14 goals and 14 assists for the Capitals.<\/p>\n

So far this season, he has five goals and six assists in 40 games.<\/p>\n

He wouldn’t play a top-tier role on any acquiring team, but he looks like a guy who would be more useful outside of Edmonton at this point.<\/p>\n
