Friedman noted that the Oilers shouldn\u2019t have too much trouble finding someone to take on the winger\u2019s contract and said the Ducks have shown early interest. However, another insider sees a potentially better fit. <\/p>\n<p>Chris Johnston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6934000\/2026\/01\/02\/nhl-trade-board-matchmaker-tuch-coleman-faulk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">of The Athletic noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToronto is low on draft capital and knows it\u2019s going to have a tough time chasing upgrades at the trade deadline as a result. The acquisition cost in this case will likely be negligible. Plus, Mangiapane is only one year removed from a season with the Washington Capitals that included some encouraging stretches of play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds that there\u2019s definitely some risk built into this type of move. Mangiapane\u2019s production has fallen off a cliff after a decent start this season. He\u2019s lost all opportunities to play with Edmonton\u2019s top stars and has been made a healthy scratch twice. \u201cThe last thing the Leafs need is another underperforming veteran forward eating up valuable cap space,\u201d argues Johnston. <\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/nhltradetalk.com\/insider-says-oilers-have-an-interested-taker-in-a-mangiapane-trade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Insider Says Oilers Have an Interested Taker in a Mangiapane Trade<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the NHL insider isn\u2019t prepared to completely rule out the idea, noting, \u201cThere\u2019s also some logic to it, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cites Mangiapane\u2019s favorable history with Leafs GM Brad Treliving, dating back to their time together in Calgary. It was there that the winger scored 35 goals in a single season. Johnston argued, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to take a risk, it\u2019s always easier to do it on a known commodity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Mangiapane-trade-fits-Leafs.jpg\" alt=\"Mangiapane trade fits Leafs\" class=\"wp-image-104064\"  \/>Mangiapane trade fits Leafs<\/p>\n<p>Any Other Teams A Fit For Mangiapane?<\/p>\n<p>Pierre LeBrun didn\u2019t see the Ducks or the Maple Leafs as his most logical fit. He chose the Winnipeg Jets. LeBrun noted, \u201cHow about a team that was first overall in the league a year ago and is in dire need of help? Give me the Jets.
