Brandon Bussi made 28 saves on 29 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes held on to a lead as they defeated the New Jersey Devils on Sunday night, 3-1 at the Prudential Center.<\/p>\n
Bussi improved his record to 14-2-1 in his first NHL season.<\/p>\n
It was the second game of a back-to-back situation for the Canes, but they were up to the task as they took advantage of a couple of key opportunities and some puck luck.<\/p>\n
Carolina got on the board just 51 seconds into the game when Nikolaj Ehlers got credited for a goal after Luke Hughes knocked the puck into his own net. Ehlers was battling in front of the net which most likely led to the Hughes miscue.<\/p>\n
It was a brutal night for Hughes after another gaffe led to another goal later in the game.<\/p>\n
About seven minutes later, the Devils tied the game but after several unsuccessful powerplay tries, that would be the last time they lit the lamp for the night. All in all, they went 0-5 with the man advantage as Bussi and the penalty kill unit stood tall.<\/p>\n
The Canes went 0-3 with their powerplay.<\/p>\n
The hustle and forechecking of Taylor Hall led to Carolina\u2019s second goal.<\/p>\n
Often times, a defenseman will carry the puck behind his net when he breaks out but Hughes cut in front of his own net, enabling Hall to poke the puck off the blueliner\u2019s stick and into the net to make it 2-1, Hurricanes.<\/p>\n
Both Carolina\u2019s goals to this point were officially unassisted.<\/p>\n
After two periods with the score 2-1, the Hurricanes were looking to hold on to their lead in the third and with Bussi\u2019s help, they delivered.<\/p>\n
The Devils outshot the Canes, 15-5 in that period but it was Carolina who got on the board.<\/p>\n
Once again, Taylor Hall created the play as he stole the puck behind the goal when Jake Allen misplayed it, then found Logan Stankoven in front of the net.<\/p>\n
Stankoven made no mistake as Allen tried to recover and scored his first goal in 10 games.<\/p>\n
Bussi improved his GAA to 2.25 and his SV% is at .906.<\/p>\n
Sean Walker played a team high 23:55 and also led the team with four blocked shots.<\/p>\n
The new guy, Noah Philp, played 10:48 and took 16 faceoffs, winning 44%.<\/p>\n
