{"id":396460,"date":"2026-01-07T23:36:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T23:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/396460\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T23:36:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T23:36:27","slug":"pair-of-veterans-giving-red-wings-just-what-they-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/396460\/","title":{"rendered":"Pair of veterans giving Red Wings just what they needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"54ZBFBN2KFGILLZCJPUUCAMYVI\">DETROIT \u2013 The Detroit Red Wings have needed others to contribute offensively, not just rely on the same three or four players for scoring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O6RRKS2DNBA5TOILYROMO2HC34\">Veterans James van Riemsdyk and Andrew Copp are delivering after slow starts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6UAIMMMM6JAR3ASDJR4RPL23XI\">Van Riemsdyk has 10 goals and 13 points in his past 18 games after producing just one goal and two points in his first 17 games. Copp has five goals and 14 points in his past 17 games, after collecting just one goal and nine points in 27 games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KOFGRLCQSVHMZFCAYXLATNMXGQ\">They\u2019ve taken some of the pressure to produce off the likes of Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AFKLDKHVUBDPDOCC4JWJZ6I27I\">\u201cI think I used the words \u2018It\u2019s a must\u2019 earlier in the year and we\u2019ve been able to get it,\u201d coach Todd McLellan said. \u201cSo, when some of the bigger, higher-end scorers have gone dry, there\u2019s been that support system and it\u2019s not just coming from one individual, it\u2019s coming from a variety of different ones in different ways. A shorthanded goal the other night <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2026\/01\/red-wings-bounce-back-with-solid-goaltending-penalty-killing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2026\/01\/red-wings-bounce-back-with-solid-goaltending-penalty-killing.html\">(for Michael Rasmussen in Monday\u2019s 5-3 victory at Ottawa),<\/a> first of the season. So, I\u2019ll reiterate that it\u2019s a must that we get that and it\u2019s also a must that the big boys keep producing as the season goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3UP46RATCZBS7HTPSFFQXLZHAY\">The Red Wings (25-15-4) host Vancouver (16-21-5) on Thursday (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZW5ZZTXIGRHMFKCMAHDCH34ILY\">Van Riemsdyk is tied for second on the team in goals since Nov. 24. He\u2019s played almost exclusively in a bottom-six capacity and with different linemates. He\u2019s also at the net-front presence on the top power-play unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XMPFTNY3R5DSVIOI7MFOF3WXDI\">\u201cJust feeling some good chemistry with different situations and my mates I\u2019ve been playing with, and I think we\u2019re just reading off each other well and playing smart, sound hockey and making good decisions for the most part,\u201d van Riemsdyk said. \u201cEspecially lately I feel like we\u2019re just really buying into that and nothing too flashy. Playing the game the right way that you can have success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H3YFRQXYPNH6LDVSS2ZH5DGSXM\">Van Riemsdyk,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2026\/01\/whats-my-line-losses-prompt-radical-changes-for-red-wings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2026\/01\/whats-my-line-losses-prompt-radical-changes-for-red-wings.html\"> following McLellan\u2019s line shuffling on Sunday,<\/a> is skating on a line with J.T. Compher and Raymond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E5YXXDM3YBCI3AWNG27JPDQ4VU\">\u201cI\u2019ve learned that especially over the last few years, just switching from different teams. the more you can talk after shifts, between games during practice, I think it\u2019s a good thing to just always have that constant dialogue,\u201d van Riemsdyk said. \u201cWhat were you seeing on this? What were you thinking on this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2HIEPND6TFGI7MKVFZ3ILPGIJM\">McLellan called van Riemsdyk \u201ca stabilizing factor\u201d on a line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PRC4NRTXOVFZVPVAWF2M34QBHQ\">\u201cMay not be the fastest guy, but he knows who he is and what he does,\u201d McLellan said. \u201cAnd he\u2019s been there so many times &#8212; on the boards vs. pressure back, checking, good reads, what\u2019s going to happen. So, it\u2019s not difficult to find him linemates. But we always look at what he might complement the best or vice versa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DS2V5RCYL5HK3AYDGC4JQPBTA4\">Copp has flourished centering a line with DeBrincat and Patrick Kane, the one unit McLellan hasn\u2019t separated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MK47FDLRZ5AKTC5CW6K26JUH4Y\">\u201cI think Copper\u2019s confidence is back to a level where it needs to be,\u201d McLellan said. \u201cI think he\u2019s put himself in a situation where he\u2019s using his legs more during the game and he\u2019s finding ways to be around the net more than he was maybe earlier in the season. And as that happens and you find a way to score a goal every now and then, you start to feel good about yourself, and it\u2019s probably the best he\u2019s felt all year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I6T64S6RCZA7TCDOZIB2JBGRWQ\">\u201cWe have tried him on the wing during the year. Maybe that didn\u2019t help him.
