{"id":397905,"date":"2026-01-08T17:31:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/397905\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T17:31:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:31:17","slug":"upper-deck-to-create-new-nhl-card-chase-with-debut-game-jersey-inserts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/397905\/","title":{"rendered":"Upper Deck to create new NHL card chase with Debut Game Jersey inserts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the success of Topps\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6105106\/2025\/02\/02\/paul-skenes-mlb-debut-patch-topps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Debut Patch cards<\/a>, Upper Deck will put its own spin on the first appearance game-worn relic concept. The company will now produce NHL Debut Game Jersey cards, which will include swatches of a rookie\u2019s game-used jersey from the first time they play in the league.<\/p>\n<p>The cards will be in 2025-26 Upper Deck Extended Series, which is scheduled to be released this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Upper Deck took inspiration from Topps\u2019 popular 1-of-1 autographed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_nkw=topps+debut+patch+1%2F1&amp;_sacat=0&amp;_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p4624852.m570.l1313&amp;mkcid=1&amp;mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&amp;siteid=0&amp;campid=5339067567&amp;customid=debutpatch&amp;toolid=10001&amp;mkevt=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Debut Patch<\/a> card series, which include a special patch worn by athletes in their first appearance in everything from MLB and MLS to the NBA, WWE and Formula 1. But Upper Deck, the exclusive NHL trading card license holder, will purposely spread the opportunity to own a piece of a given rookie\u2019s milestone moment to more collectors with three card variations with different print runs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, it\u2019s no secret Topps has had a good run with their pro debut jersey patches, but there were some things that we didn\u2019t necessarily agree with within that program and wanted to maybe do something different,\u201d Upper Deck president Jason Masherah said.<\/p>\n<p>The three variations will include jersey relic cards without autographs, jersey relic autographed cards (serial numbered to their jersey number) and a one-of-a-kind autographed Black variation containing a unique patch or fight strap tags from the debut jersey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach team does things a little bit differently, but there\u2019s a label chronicling the game,\u201d Masherah said. \u201cIn some cases, they\u2019ll take the fight strap and the equipment manager will write the date and the period that the game-used jersey was worn. And we\u2019re basically going to take that tag or that fight strap that\u2019s been inscribed by the equipment manager and make that into the one-of-one piece with the player\u2019s signature and make that the chase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6954733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Debut-Game-Jersey-Program-Card-Images-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1069\" height=\"717\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>There will also be three card designs paying homage to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_nkw=1996-97+UD+game+jersey&amp;_sacat=0&amp;_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p4624852.m570.l1313&amp;mkcid=1&amp;mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&amp;siteid=0&amp;campid=5339067567&amp;customid=udgamejersey&amp;toolid=10001&amp;mkevt=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1996-97 UD Game Jersey<\/a> inserts that introduced the first-ever game-used jersey trading cards to the hobby. Each Debut Game Jersey card will feature an image of the player from their first professional game, as well as a piece of the jersey they wore during that game. Upper Deck also will offer a certificate of authenticity for each of these cards, matching the exact date of the debut game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the NHL rookie cards collectors will chase in the initial offering include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_nkw=matthew+schaefer&amp;_sacat=0&amp;_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p4624852.m570.l1313&amp;mkcid=1&amp;mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&amp;siteid=0&amp;campid=5339067567&amp;customid=schaefer&amp;toolid=10001&amp;mkevt=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Schaefer<\/a>, Sam Dickinson, Michael Misa, Beckett Sennecke, Brady Martin, Isaac Howard and Easton Cowan.<\/p>\n<p>Masherah said including the Debut Game Jersey cards into a more cost-friendly set like Extended Series was also by design to allow increased chances for collectors to acquire these unique cards at a lower price point. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_nkw=2024-25+upper+deck+extended+series+hockey+hobby+box&amp;_sacat=0&amp;_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p4624852.m570.l1313&amp;mkcid=1&amp;mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&amp;siteid=0&amp;campid=5339067567&amp;customid=extendedseries&amp;toolid=10001&amp;mkevt=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2024-25 Extended Series hobby box<\/a> can be found online between $110 and $130 per box. However, the inclusion of these cards could drive up the demand for and value of Extended Series boxes the way Topps\u2019 MLB Debut Patches have done with its Chrome Update Series.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cards aren\u2019t going to be common, but we wanted the average collector to be able to get their favorite rookie or their favorite player,\u201d Masherah said. \u201cBut they will be uncommon enough to where some of these will be extremely high-dollar type cards, especially the autographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Athletic maintains full editorial independence in all our coverage.
