The 23-19-3 Sharks have been favored just twice this season according to MoneyLine.com. That’s despite having a top-three scorer in the NHL in Macklin Celebrini, winning over half their games, and being tied for most wins in the Pacific Division.

Moneyline bets are wagers on the outright winners of games. For example, the Sharks were +140 underdogs before their game against the Dallas Stars on Jan. 10. A $100 wager on the Sharks would’ve won you $140 on top of your money back. The Sharks, especially, shocked Vegas — the casinos, not the team! — in games when they’ve been +200 or more underdogs, going 4-6 with wins against the New York Rangers (+233), Colorado Avalanche (+208), the Florida Panthers (+210) and Carolina Hurricanes (+264).

Also according to the same website, the Sharks are 30-15 against the spread this season. The “spread” refers to points given to the underdog to make betting odds around even. For example, during that Sharks vs. Stars game Saturday, you could take about even odds to bet the Stars or bet the Sharks plus 1.5 goals. When you give the Sharks the extra points, they’ve won money 30-of-45 times.

MoneyLine.com, which curates their odds from popular top sportsbooks, has listed the San Jose Sharks as favorites just twice this season, both home games. San Jose was a -103 favorite ahead of their Nov. 28 win over the Vancouver Canucks and a -131 favorite ahead of their loss the Seattle Kraken on Dec. 20. In those instances, you would’ve had to bet $103 or $131 to return a $100 profit.

Sportsbooks have been unimpressed with the Sharks throughout their last few seasons. According to StatMuse, which builds a consensus betting line from their AI model, the Sharks have only been favored twice over the last three seasons. They agreed with favoring the Sharks on Dec. 20, 2025, and listed the Sharks as favorites on March 13, 2025 last season against the Chicago Blackhawks.

During the 2023-24 season, en route to drafting Celebrini, the Sharks were underdogs in every game. In 2022-23, the Sharks finished fourth-last with just 22 wins, but were favored in 18 according to StatMuse. Only nine of those games were they playing teams that finished ahead of them in the standings.

And, sportsbooks are still likely to favor the Sharks’ opponents in the near future. The next time the Sharks play a team not currently in a playoff spot is Jan. 19 against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, but on the road. Later in January, the Sharks could be favored when they host the New York Rangers or ahead of road games at the Canucks or at the Calgary Flames.

Betting on the San Jose Sharks has been a moneymaker this season.
