{"id":407451,"date":"2026-01-14T16:25:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/407451\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T16:25:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:25:20","slug":"vancouver-canucks-management-using-rebuild-word-open-to-moving-elias-pettersson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/407451\/","title":{"rendered":"Vancouver Canucks management using \u2018rebuild\u2019 word, open to moving Elias Pettersson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Sitting last in the NHL and 12 points out of a playoff spot, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> appear to be setting their course for a rebuild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports the struggling Canucks are willing to consider all options as the trade deadline draws closer, including trading centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elias-pettersson\/8483678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elias-pettersson\/8483678\" target=\"_blank\">Elias Pettersson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cObviously, every club in the National Hockey League has untouchables, but management of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> is now using the rebuild word, so they have to be open for business, open for just about anything, and that might include finally trading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elias-pettersson\/8483678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elias-pettersson\/8483678\" target=\"_blank\">Elias Pettersson<\/a>,&#8221; Dreger explained on Insider Trading Tuesday. \u201cNow, we know that there\u2019s been a ton of speculation from a media perspective on Pettersson\u2019s future with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/vancouver-canucks\/23\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. That was more into the off-season, more last season than to this point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI can tell you that there\u2019s been no communication with the agent who represents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elias-pettersson\/8483678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/elias-pettersson\/8483678\" target=\"_blank\">Elias Pettersson<\/a>, Pat Brisson, and they would have to communicate directly with Pettersson\u2019s camp because he has the no-move clause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 27-year-old Pettersson has 13 goals and 28 points in 38 games this season. He carries a lofty $11.6 million cap hit through the 2031-32 season on the eight-year, $92.8 million deal he signed in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Pettersson, who was selected fifth overall in the 2017 draft, has seen his production drop off significantly since inking that deal. He posted 15 goals and 45 points in 64 games last season in the first year of the deal after averaging 35 goals and 86 points over the previous three campaigns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Swedish centre was involved in a rift with teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jt-miller\/8476468\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jt-miller\/8476468\" target=\"_blank\">J.T. Miller<\/a> that went public last season, eventually leading to Miller being traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Vancouver has already made what may stand as the biggest trade of this season, with captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/quinn-hughes\/8480800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/quinn-hughes\/8480800\" target=\"_blank\">Quinn Hughes<\/a> being moved in December to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/minnesota-wild\/30\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/minnesota-wild\/30\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> for a package of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/marco-rossi\/8482079\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/marco-rossi\/8482079\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Rossi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/liam-ohgren\/8483499\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/liam-ohgren\/8483499\" target=\"_blank\">Liam Ohgren<\/a>, defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/zeev-buium\/8484798\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/zeev-buium\/8484798\" target=\"_blank\">Zeev Buium<\/a> and a first-round pick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Canucks, who are winless in their past five games, have been weighing trade options for pending unrestricted free agents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/kiefer-sherwood\/8480748\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/kiefer-sherwood\/8480748\" target=\"_blank\">Kiefer Sherwood<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/evander-kane\/8475169\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/evander-kane\/8475169\" target=\"_blank\">Evander Kane<\/a> dating back to the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Vancouver has missed the playoffs in four of the past five seasons and eight of the past 10 years dating back to 2015.
