The New York Rangers<\/a> may have hit rock bottom with that ugly 10-2 loss to the Boston Bruins last weekend, but they haven’t been able to stop the bleeding yet. They’re now winless in five straight, and have just one win in their last nine. They’re edging closer and closer to official “SELL” territory (if they aren’t there already).\u00a0<\/p>\n

The biggest name, of course, that GM Chris Drury could move, is pending unrestricted free agent\u2014and Rangers top scorer\u2014Artemi Panarin. It doesn’t appear as if there’s any extension coming, and a trade by the deadline seems to be very much on the table.<\/p>\n

But the Bread Man could lay toast to the Rangers’ best-laid plans, as he does hold a full no-move clause.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Elliotte Friedman said<\/a> on the 32 Thoughts podcast this week that he thinks that Drury does need to start seriously thinking about it, and figure out a way to get something done. Both for the team, and for Panarin and his pending free agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is in (Panarin’s) best interests to go somewhere and thrive… It can’t hurt his value. I think what you’re hoping for is, if you are waving the white flag on the season… at some point you have to go to him and his reps and say, ‘Are there some teams we can work with there? Are there some places where you would be willing to go?’<\/p>\n

Friedman envisions four big-name contenders in the running to pry Panarin loose from Manhattan:<\/p>\n

Colorado AvalancheFlorida PanthersMinnesota WildWashington Capitals<\/p>\n

The Panthers, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, are a natural team to consider. Don’t count out GM Bill Zito finding a way to make another miracle happen.<\/p>\n

Still in the East, the legendary Alex Ovechkin could be a card that helps lure fellow Russian Panarin to Washington.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Panarin has the same agent as another of his countrymen, Kirill Kaprizov, in Minnesota. That could help the Wild’s pursuit, on top of their recent big splash to land Quinn Hughes.<\/p>\n

And then there’s Colorado. The Avalanche seem like the team to beat this season, leading the NHL with a 33-4-8 mark and 74 points. The Avs made a big-money short-term offer to Panarin in free agency in the summer of 2019 before he signed with the Rangers on a long-term deal. “Could you imagine Panarin on that (Avalanche) team (this year) and what it might look like?” asked Friedman, rhetorically.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thursday on TSN’s Insider Trading, Darren Dreger<\/a> threw out a couple of other big-name teams to consider as well: the Dallas Stars and the Vegas Golden Knights.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Rangers tried to get him to take a shorter, team-friendly deal before the season began, but Panarin wasn’t interested.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is definitely something to keep a close eye on as we get closer to the trade deadline.<\/p>\n
