{"id":411374,"date":"2026-01-16T20:08:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T20:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/411374\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T20:08:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T20:08:11","slug":"we-are-not-going-to-stand-pat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/411374\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We are not going to stand pat\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a> are focusing on a \u201cretool\u201d as the team is on track to miss the playoffs for a second straight year, general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/chris-drury\/8460562\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/chris-drury\/8460562\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Drury<\/a> announced on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis will not be a rebuild,\u201d Drury vowed in a letter penned to fans. \u201cThis will be a retool built around our core players and prospects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Drury announced the franchise\u2019s new direction two days after\u00a0fans at Madison Square Garden\u00a0chanted \u201cFire Drury\u201d during an 8-4 loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to take a moment to connect with our loyal and passionate fanbase,\u201d Drury wrote. \u201cWe know and feel your disappointment with how the season has gone to this point. We are just as frustrated and want nothing more than to deliver an on-ice product you can be proud of &#8211; it\u2019s what drives us every day. No one in the organization is happy with what has transpired &#8211; from management, to coaches, to players. Over the last few years, we\u2019ve had some successes and moments to cherish, but ultimately it was not the end goal. We are working relentlessly every day to bring a Stanley Cup back to New York because that is what our fans deserve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWith our position in the standings and injuries to key players this season, we must be honest and realistic about our situation. We are not going to stand pat &#8211; a shift will give us the ability to be smart and opportunistic as we retool the team. This will not be a rebuild. This will be a retool built around our core players and prospects. We will target players that bring tenacity, skill, speed, and a winning pedigree with a focus on obtaining young players, draft picks, and cap space to allow us flexibility moving forward. That may mean saying goodbye to players that have brought us and our fans great moments over the years. These players represented the Rangers with pride and class and will always be a part of our family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAs we start on this new strategic plan, we will continue to play hard with pride and passion for our fans. We appreciate your unwavering support for the Rangers more than we can describe and thank you for all that you do for our organization. You will begin to see some of our plans come to light in the coming weeks and months. LGR\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mollie Walker of the New York Post reports the Rangers players were informed earlier on Friday that the letter would be going out and there was a meeting between the team\u2019s leadership group and Drury, in addition to an individual meeting between Drury and star winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" target=\"_blank\">Artemi Panarin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m told whole <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NYR?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#NYR<\/a> team was informed this letter from GM Chris Drury would be going out later today. <\/p>\n<p>There was another meeting just with the leadership group.<\/p>\n<p>Artemi Panarin also had an individual meeting with Drury today, per source.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mollie Walker (@MollieeWalkerr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MollieeWalkerr\/status\/2012235040340459656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January 16, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Rangers currently sit last the Eastern Conference amid a four-game losing skid and have just a 2-6-2 record in their past 10 games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" target=\"_blank\"> Panarin<\/a> was listed at No. 3 on TSN\u2019s first Trade Bait board of 2026 on Thursday. Panarin is a pending unrestricted free agent, and while the Rangers are struggling, he is on pace to top the point-per-game mark for the ninth straight season with 16 goals and 51 points in 47 games this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 34-year-old winger has a full no-move clause in the last of a seven-year deal signed with the Rangers in 2019 at a cap hit of $11.64 million and it remains unclear if he would be willing to waive his trade protection ahead of the March 6 deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a whirlwind of speculation around what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/chris-drury\/8460562\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/chris-drury\/8460562\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Drury<\/a>, the general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-rangers\/3\" target=\"_blank\">New York Rangers<\/a> might do,\u201d\u00a0TSN Hockey Insider Darren\u00a0Dreger explained on Early Trading Thursday. \u201cThat is a nasty building when things aren\u2019t going well, and the Dolan family that owns the Rangers is part of it. They can hear it, and undoubtedly there\u2019s an emotional impact on what Drury might be able to do moving forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLots of speculation around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/artemi-panarin\/8478550\" target=\"_blank\">Artemi Panarin<\/a>, we know he\u2019s got the expiring contract, but he also has a no-move clause, so what direction is Panarin willing to go in?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s been some speculation and talk that the Panarin camp has historically engaged in what an extension might look like with the Rangers, and the belief is that it doesn\u2019t look good from Panarin\u2019s perspective, so we do have to wait a little bit longer to see how this plays out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIs he willing, if there is no extension that is willing to be negotiated, is he willing to present a list? And how short is that list?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYou always look at the normal teams: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/florida-panthers\/13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/florida-panthers\/13\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Panthers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/dallas-stars\/25\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/dallas-stars\/25\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Stars<\/a>, the Golden Knights. Maybe there\u2019s a couple of other teams that would express interest in the star that Panarin is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut if he doesn\u2019t present that list, and he decides that there is an extension or isn\u2019t an extension that works for him, he could absolutely walk into free agency, and the Rangers get nothing in return. That would be worst-case scenario for Drury and the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Rangers became just the fourth team in NHL history to win the Presidents\u2019 Trophy one season and miss the playoffs the next last spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Drury sent a memo out to other NHL general managers early last season that the team was willing to listen to trade offers on then-captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jacob-trouba\/8476885\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jacob-trouba\/8476885\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Trouba<\/a> and veteran forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/chris-kreider\/8475184\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/chris-kreider\/8475184\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Kreider<\/a>. The memo came early in a stretch that saw the team go 5-16-0 over a 21-game span after a promising 12-4-1 to plummet out of a playoff spot. Trouba was moved during the free fall, while Kreider was traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/anaheim-ducks\/24\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/anaheim-ducks\/24\" target=\"_blank\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a> in the off-season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Rangers were buyers ahead of the trade deadline last season, though, acquiring now-captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jt-miller\/8476468\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jt-miller\/8476468\" target=\"_blank\">J.T.
