The Vancouver Canucks announced some sad news on social media on Friday, sharing the passing of an important member of the team’s early years in the NHL.<\/p>\n

Prior to beginning their first season in the National Hockey League back in the fall of 1970, the organization needed to decide on a few different things – what would our team name be, what would our colours be, and most important for any sports franchise, what is our logo going to look like.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the team’s history, they’ve had some incredible jerseys and logos that fans, and players love, including their original sweaters that featured the ‘Stick-in-Rink’ logo.<\/p>\n

“I think the stick-in-rink is the iconic logo of the Vancouver Canucks. If I owned the team, which I don’t, that should be the one for me. That’s my personal opinion,” Linden said.<\/p>\n

He added, “That logo is timeless. It’s simple. When I worked there I was like, ‘hey, this should never change. We should go back to where it started and it should never change again.’ We can have fun with third jerseys and that sort of thing but it should be the stick-in-rink.”<\/p>\n

Sadly on New Year’s Eve, we lost the man who created the original Vancouver Canucks ‘Stick-in-Rink’ logo, Joe Borovich, who passed away at the age of 86, the team announced on social media on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

“The Vancouver Canucks are deeply saddened by the passing of Joe Borovich, the creator of the team’s original stick-in-rink logo, unveiled during the club’s inaugural NHL season in 1970.<\/p>\n

Joe’s timeless design played a significant role in shaping the identity of the franchise and continues to hold a special place in Canucks history. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those touched by his creativity and passion for the game.” the Canucks said on X.<\/p>\n

The Stick-in-Rink logo was worn from the team’s first season in 1970-71 until 1978, when the Vancouver Canucks introduced their famous ‘Skate’ logo.<\/p>\n

After disappearing following the 1977-78 campaign, the Stick-in-Rink logo wouldn’t be seen again until 2006, when the Vancouver Canucks re-introduced it as a vintage jersey, worn on occasion for a couple season.<\/p>\n

In 2008, a year after the NHL transitioned to the Reebok Edge template, the Stick-in-Rink logo was brought back again, with some slight modifications, as their new alternate jersey, which was worn until 2017.<\/p>\n

During the team’s 40th anniversary in 2010-11, the Canucks brought back the original white version of the Stick-in-Rink jerseys, which included blue block lettering and no name plate on the back of the sweaters.<\/p>\n
