The Montreal Canadiens have signed a familiar face, Swedish defenceman Gustav Lindstrom.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll remember Lindstrom from his brief stint with the team last season, as he appeared in 14 games for the Habs. The 25-year-old blueliner managed to score three goals in that time frame, a rather impressive level of production considering he how he arrived in Montreal in the first place.<\/p>\n

Lindstrom was originally acquired in the trade that saw longtime Hab Jeff Petry join the Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. The Canadiens retained 50 percent of Petry\u2019s salary, while receiving a fourth-round pick in return. The Anaheim Ducks ended up plucking Lindstrom from waivers later in the season.<\/p>\n

The Canadiens immediately placed Lindstrom on waivers, in a bid to assign him to the team\u2019s AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket. In addition to Lindstrom hitting the waiver wire, the Carolina Hurricanes waived 2016 first-round pick Tyson Jost<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why The Montreal Canadiens Signed Lindstrom<\/p>\n

Despite his scoring, Lindstrom\u2019s overall play in the NHL was far from ideal, as he produced very poor underlying numbers, however, that\u2019s par for the course for a depth player in a bottom-five lineup. This time around, Lindstrom was signed to bolster the defensive group in the AHL, adding a right-handed defenceman to the mix for the Laval Rocket.<\/p>\n

With David Reinbacher\u2019s knee injury keeping him out of action for four to five months, the Rocket only have two right-handed defencemen in the mix: Logan Mailloux and Zack Hayes. Mailloux is used to being one of the busiest players on the team, and he\u2019ll happily absorb any extra ice time, but it\u2019s never a bad idea to provide a little insurance to avoid putting too much on the top prospect\u2019s plate.<\/p>\n

The goal this season is to qualify for the playoffs, a challenge the team failed to accomplish last season. With new head coach Pascal Vincent in place, the organization is hoping they\u2019ve finally found a long-term head coach to guide their top prospects to the NHL.<\/p>\n

The Laval Rocket will open their season on October 11, facing the Bruins in Providence.<\/p>\n
