Simon Edvinsson<\/a> opened the scoring for Detroit on Wednesday as the Red Wings edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in overtime.<\/p>\n

The door to an Olympic opportunity for Edvinsson may also be opening a little bit further.<\/p>\n

Toronto defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson left the game with a lower-body injury. Leafs coach Craig Berube was saying that more would be finding out more about the severity of the injury sometime on Thursday.<\/p>\n

While his long-term status remains unknown, Ekman-Larsson\u2019s departure raises another question mark behind a player who was among the selections for the Swedish Olympic team. NHL players are slated to compete at next month\u2019s Winter Games in Italy.<\/p>\n

Edvinsson<\/a> was not among the selections for that team. However, the chances of that situation are changing every day.<\/p>\n

Ekman-Larsson joins Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay Lightning), Erik Karlsson (Pittsburgh Penguins), and Jonas Brodin (Minnesota Wild) as Swedish defense selections who are currently on an NHL injury list.<\/p>\n

It is expected that Brodin will not be playing in Italy. That should be made a certainty within the week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will give it a few more days before we can fully confirm it,\u201d Swedish coach Sam Hallam<\/a> told Swedish website Expressen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Karlsson also seems doubtful.<\/p>\n

Will Sweden Add Red Wings Edvinsson?<\/p>\n

Certainly, these developments have put Edvinsson into contention to join the Swedish squad. Expressen is projecting Edvinsson<\/a>, as a top contender to be an addition to Sweden\u2019s Olympic roster. Hampus Lindholm of the Boston Bruins and Mattias Ekholm of the Edmonton Oilers are also on that list.<\/p>\n

Hallam plans to be patient in deciding who might be an addition to his squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking from several different perspectives,\u201d Hallam said. \u201cWe won\u2019t bring in any replacements this week. We\u2019ll use the time to create a better picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the work continues on how we will put the squad together and be as sharp and ready as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Wednesday\u2019s win over the Leafs, Edvinsson told reporters he\u2019d be excited to be an Olympian.<\/p>\n

\u201cOlympics? Probably the biggest thing you can play, right?\u201d Edvinsson said on the team\u2019s website. \u201cSo, the honor to represent your country, that would be huge.<\/p>\n
