For months, the narrative was stoic: Kadri was happy in Calgary, settled, and not looking to chase a ring elsewhere. That narrative has officially shattered.

According to a breaking report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, there has been a significant shift in camp Kadri. Sources confirm that while a formal trade request hasn’t been slapped on Craig Conroy’s desk, Kadri has informed the organization he is now open to being moved. With the “no-movement” hurdle effectively lowered, the floodgates have opened. Four specific teams—the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild, and his former squad, the Colorado Avalanche—are already linked to the veteran center. But the cost? It’s going to be steep.

This isn’t just a salary dump; it’s a bidding war for one of the NHL’s premier playoff performers.

The “Andersson Standard” and the Cost of Doing Business

If you think the Flames are going to give Kadri away just to clear his $7 million cap hit, think again. GM Craig Conroy has already set the market price with the recent Rasmus Andersson trade to Vegas. That deal is now the internal benchmark—the “Andersson Standard.”

To land Kadri, teams are looking at a package that starts with a 1st-round pick and a high-end, NHL-ready prospect.

The complication, of course, is the contract. Kadri is on the books for $7 million AAV for another three seasons. However, Pagnotta reports that Calgary is willing to “eat” some of that salary to maximize the return. If the Flames use their retention slot, the asking price skyrockets. You aren’t just paying for the player; you are paying for the cap flexibility. If Calgary retains 50%, bringing Kadri down to a $3.5M hit, Conroy will demand an additional premium asset—likely a second top-tier prospect or a roster player with upside.

Why Dallas and Colorado are the Ones to Watch

Personally, I look at this list of suitors and the Dallas Stars scream “fit.” They have been hunting for that extra layer of grit down the middle to push them over the top in the West. Pagnotta noted he is “really curious about Dallas,” and frankly, so am I. Kadri fits their window perfectly.

Then there is the romance of a Colorado Avalanche reunion. We all know what happened the last time Kadri wore a burgundy sweater—he hoisted the Stanley Cup. With Colorado’s depth tested, bringing back a known commodity who thrives in their system could be the move that saves their season.

While the Montreal Canadiens are mentioned, I struggle to see the timeline fit unless they view Kadri as the ultimate mentor for their young core. The Minnesota Wild, always in the mix, would be a terrifying team to play against with Kadri anchoring their second line.

A Playoff Monster in Waiting

Critics will point to his stats this year—9 goals and 35 points in 52 games. It’s a down year, absolutely. But let’s be real: he’s playing on a Flames team that has lost four straight and holds the 3rd worst record in the NHL. Context matters.

The teams calling aren’t trading for regular-season Kadri. They are trading for Playoff Kadri.

At 35, he remains a physical force. His career playoff stat line is absurdly good: 82 games, 30 goals, 69 points, and a +24 rating with 156 hits. He drags teams into the fight. In a seven-game series, there are very few centers I’d take over a motivated Nazem Kadri. With the Flames in full teardown mode, moving #91 is the next logical domino to fall, and for the first time all season, Kadri seems ready to let it happen.

Latest Calgary Flames News & Fantasy Pool

For more breaking updates on the Nazem Kadri situation and other roster moves, keep it locked here at nhltraderumor.com.
