The Edmonton Oilers<\/a> had a close call against the Macklin Celebrini-led San Jose Sharks<\/a>. They just could not find their groove early in the game but managed to claw their way into the win column with heroics from Connor McDavid, Evan Bouchard, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman. One of them even etched their legacy further into the annals of NHL history during their 4-3 overtime thriller.<\/p>\n

McDavid shines against San Jose<\/p>\n

By the start of the third period, a lot of NHL fans thought that it was a foregone conclusion that the Oilers would lose. After all, they did give up three goals in two periods to the Sharks without scoring one of their own. However, their fate would change once McDavid got ahold of the puck late in the third period. The Oilers superstar got a goal for the home crowd at Rogers Place and that was enough to get them running.<\/p>\n

Draisaitl and Bouchard would immediately follow this up with their own goals to tie the game. As the Edmonton crowd went into overtime, the Oilers clearly felt that the momentum was under their wings. Hyman shut the Sharks out to score the game-winning goal.<\/p>\n

Through this game, he has now recorded 60 assists for the season. This marks the Oilers superstar’s 10th consecutive season with 60 assists or more. The only other player to do it was Wayne Gretzky. Furthermore, McDavid has tied Ray Bourque and Adam Oates for the most 60+ assist seasons. He now only needs to beat Paul Coffey who did it for 11 non-consecutive seasons and Gretzky who did it for 17 seasons, per Gerry Moddejonge of NHL.com<\/a><\/p>\n

McDavid might be getting ready for the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics already. However, he still has a few games left in the NHL before rejoining Team Canada. The Oilers are set to face the Minnesota Wild<\/a>, Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>, and Calgary Flames<\/a> before the break. Will they finally usurp the Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> for the top spot in the Pacific Division by then?<\/p>\n
