The Ottawa Senators<\/a> are trying to right the ship, as they aim to claw their way back into the playoff picture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That will keep the buying trade chatter alive for the Senators, and one name that keeps circling around the team is Calgary Flames<\/a> winger Blake Coleman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Team reporter Bruce Garrioch<\/a> has said Ottawa has at least checked in with Calgary on their veteran winger.<\/p>\n

Senators interest in Blake Coleman is about playoff traits<\/p>\n

Coleman plays hard minutes, can kill penalties, and has an impressive resume. He\u2019s a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>, and this season he\u2019s produced 13 goals and 21 points in 44 games for Calgary while playing a reliable two way style.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He’s also added 110 hits and 105 shots, while averaging 17:00 minutes of ice time per game.<\/p>\n

The timing is tricky, though, because Flames coach Ryan Huska said Coleman is shut down until after the Olympic break with an upper-body injury, which could slow the market short term but also keep him fresher for a stretch run.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ottawa is also in a really tricky spot, too, because despite their two recent wins, they still only have 57 points, which is 10 points behind the Montreal Canadiens<\/a> and Boston Bruins<\/a> for either wild card spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What it could cost Ottawa to land Coleman from Calgary<\/p>\n

Coleman carries a $4.9 million cap hit through next season and has a modified no-trade clause, so Ottawa would likely need either retention or some cap gymnastics, plus Coleman\u2019s buy-in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If Calgary retains, the ask goes up, and that is where the bidding war could come in, with reports suggesting a long list of teams have shown interest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Ottawa, the need for a player like Coleman is obvious. He adds proven playoff edge and stabilizes a group that has been searching for answers in key defensive situations all year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
