{"id":437896,"date":"2026-01-31T11:23:28","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T11:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/437896\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T11:23:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T11:23:28","slug":"detroit-red-wings-patrick-kane-passes-mike-modano-as-highest-scoring-american-born-player","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/437896\/","title":{"rendered":"Detroit Red Wings\u2019 Patrick Kane passes Mike Modano as highest-scoring American born player"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/patrick-kane\/8474141\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/patrick-kane\/8474141\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Kane<\/a> is now the highest-scoring U.S.-born player in NHL history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Kane passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/mike-modano\/8449645\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/mike-modano\/8449645\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Modano<\/a> Thursday night by recording his 1,375th point on an assist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/detroit-red-wings\/17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/detroit-red-wings\/17\" target=\"_blank\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>\u2019 game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/washington-capitals\/15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/washington-capitals\/15\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Capitals<\/a>. He got there a couple of months after turning 37, while Modano was 40 when he scored a goal to register point No. 1,374.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you think of USA Hockey, he\u2019s one of the first players that comes to mind, if not the first player,\u201d fellow American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jack-eichel\/8478403\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jack-eichel\/8478403\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Eichel<\/a> said. \u201cSuch a great representation of USA Hockey and us Americans \u2014 something for a lot of the guys that came after him to strive to be, myself included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Kane has been one of the faces of American hockey since getting taken with the first pick in the 2007 draft by Chicago. He helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup three times from 2010-15 as a co-headliner of one of the most successful runs since the league\u2019s salary cap era began in \u201905.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">U.S.-born defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/charlie-mcavoy\/8479325\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/charlie-mcavoy\/8479325\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a> recalled watching Kane on those long runs \u201cdo stuff that at the time people didn\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHis type of player just transcends now, when back then there wasn\u2019t anybody that was really doing that,\u201d U.S.-born defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/charlie-mcavoy\/8479325\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/charlie-mcavoy\/8479325\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie McAvoy<\/a> said. \u201cHe changed the game of hockey. He\u2019s an absolute legend. And it\u2019s great that he\u2019s an American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Kane became the 50th player and fifth American to score 500 goals, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/keith-tkachuk\/8458229\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/keith-tkachuk\/8458229\" target=\"_blank\">Keith Tkachuk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jeremy-roenick\/8450978\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jeremy-roenick\/8450978\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Roenick<\/a> and Joe Mullen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/brett-hull\/8448091\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/brett-hull\/8448091\" target=\"_blank\">Brett Hull<\/a>, a dual citizen who was born in Canada and played internationally for the U.S., had 741 goals and 1,391 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s well on his way to being the best USA player of all time,\u201d countryman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jack-hughes-359977\/8481559\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jack-hughes-359977\/8481559\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Hughes<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Kane won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in \u201907-08, the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2013 and the Hart Trophy as regular-season MVP in 2015-16, when he also led the league in scoring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSuch an iconic player, just played with such passion,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/tage-thompson\/8479420\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/tage-thompson\/8479420\" target=\"_blank\">Tage Thompson<\/a>, who\u2019s a first-time U.S. Olympian this year. \u201cVery enthusiastic, loved scoring goals, loved making plays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Kane\u2019s slick hands more than made up for him being on the smaller side at 5-foot-10 and under 180 pounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s maybe got the best highlight reel of all time,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cJust as a kid, you watch all of his videos and everything, and you\u2019re like, that\u2019s the guy you want to be just because of how skilled he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">AP NHL: https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/nhl<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Stephen Whyno, The Associated Press<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Patrick Kane is now the highest-scoring U.S.-born player in NHL history.
