The Pittsburgh Penguins (27-14-11) have won five in a row and have points in eight straight, claiming second place in the Metro Division. It is a big day as they host former coach Mike Sullivan and the New York Rangers (22-27-6) at PPG Paints Arena Saturday.

The puck drops just after 3:30 p.m for a national TV audience, and the Penguins are honoring the 2016 Stanley Cup championship team. The 2016 team also includes Sullivan, who coached the Penguins for nearly 10 years.

The Penguins are on a heater. From middling in the playoff fight to solidly in a good spot, the team’s 12-2-2 run since the holiday break has firmly established its chances. As of Jan. 31, the Penguins have an 84.2% chance to make the postseason, according to Moneypuck.com.

The Penguins overcame a sluggish start to absolutely overwhelm the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-2 Thursday. Connor Dewar had a pair of goals. Egor Chinakhov, Ben Kindel, Anthony Mantha, and Ryan Shea also lit the lamp.

Mantha, Blake Lizotte, and Noel Acciari also had two assists.

Arturs Silovs was given credit for 18 saves on only 20 shots.

The Rangers are sledding to the bottom of the Eastern Conference. In a season full of promise with Sullivan, their new coach, the Rangers are now falling fast and on the precipice of a rebuild after general manager Chris Drury sent a letter to fans asking for patience as they retool.

The Rangers have lost 10 of their last 12 games (2-9-1) and have endured a 10-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, as well as consecutive losses in a home-and-home to the New York Islanders, which is unforgivable in Manhattan.

The Islanders beat the Rangers 5-2 on Wednesday and 2-1 Thursday.

Artemi Panarin won’t play Saturday, and the Rangers’ superstar winger Artemi Panarin won’t play again with the Rangers, as they have scratched him indefinitely pending the team’s ability to work out a trade.

The Rangers are also without their starting goalie, Igor Shesterkin.

The Penguins will announce the status of veterans Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin when coach Dan Muse speaks at 1:30 p.m. The pair missed practice Friday while being evaluated for unspecified injuries. Bryan Rust will serve the second of his three-game suspension.

In keeping with the Penguins’ goalie rotation, Stuart Skinner is the likely starter Saturday. Spencer Martin has been getting the bulk of the starts but has posted just an .864 save percentage over four games in January. Jonathan Quick is expected in net.

Update: Ther Penguins announced Kris Letang will be out for weeks, approximately four, with a fractured foot.

How to Watch

TV: ABC

Radio: 105.9 The X

Expected Penguins Lines

Rickard Rakell-Sidney Crosby-Justin Brazeau

Tommy Novak-Kevin Hayes-Egor Chinakhov

Rutger McGroarty-Ben Kindel-Anthony Mantha

Connor Dewar-Blake Lizotte-Noel Acciari

Defense

Parker Wotherspoon-Erik Karlsson

Brett Kulak-Connor Clifton

Ilya Solovyov-Ryan Shea

Goalie: Stuart Skinner, expected

Expected Rangers Lines

Gabe Perreault-J.T.
